Yup. Gibson's failed attempt at active electronics.
Also - styling FAIL.

I don't know, in a weird way I don't hate the look. You must admit it's quite a departure from the same old Gibson LP SG FV and TB. They should have worked it a little more. I'd give a couple hundred but not a couple thousand. What year were they made?

Late 70's, early 80's. Not good sellers - in fact, almost universally reviled. Probably why most of them that surface are in excellent shape.

It was called RD for research and development. They had a reissue of it a few years ago.

Good friend of mine had one in the 80's. It was his first real guitar.

IIRC it weighed a ton. He sold it & never missed it.

SG denotes Solid Guitar. I though maybe RD denoted Real Dumb.

So I talked to my buddy who had one. He said the active electronics were made by Moog - a compressor/expander.

He actually wishes he had kept it because it was a well made guitar that played well in spite of the funky shape. It cost him around $600 in about 1982.

I knew that. How come I didn't remember it, Kevin?

Some people like them. Usually they are people with a preference for powerful clean amplifiers.

Like any other guitar, I suppose it is good as it sounds. But lord, what an ugly guitar...

When I was 12, I thought they were cool. Actually I thought they looked similar to a Firebird. I never saw them side by side at the time to notice the difference in the headstock but I suspect the body was influenced by the Bird.

This is a guitar I built using the idea of the Gibson RD. Nice guitar and one of the best I've built.

Also, Mr. Page played one years ago.
