I am thnking it may be our responsibility in the lutherie world to steer customers to a satin finish on guitars...let me tell you why.

Last night, I had the privlidge (thanks to a great Valentines gift from the girlfriend) to see Guy Clark, Joe Ely, John Hiatt and Lyle Lovett in concert. Man, what a great show. They would take turns singing songs, no set list, just incredible.

The only problem I had was that the guitars were so darn shiny that they would reflect the spotlights right back in peoples eyes. Someone could get blinded at one of these shows!!!

Another atrist I miss is Jim Crose. I went and saw his concert in Natchitoches LA. at Northwestern State Univ. While dirving home to Ft. Worth that night, they came on the radio with the news of his plane crash shortly after leaving Natchitoches . Talk about going from high to low in one eveningMichaelP38765.4359490741

I had the same experience at another awesome show: Leo Kottke. The
blinding reflection off that guitar was almost as unbelieveable as his picking!

My most missed artist is Michael Hedges, I was so late in learning about his music I missed many great shows at the Ark in Ann Arbor, Im sure Hesh could chime in on what a great venue the Ark is.

I don't remember Leo's guitar being that shiny. I think Joe Ely and Lyle Lovett had their guitars on a buffer right before the show!

These are definately the kinds of shows to catch while you can. What a real inspiration to see these guys playing.

Hey, that is how they entertain themselves - directing the spotlight reflection into peoples eyes. At least that's how I used to entertain myself.

Bruce Cockburn had all of his guitars custom finished with a low gloss lacquer on the top so as not to blind his audiences. A very courteous soul. (But then he's a Canadian eh?)
It is a major drag to stumble away from a gig with spots burned into your retinas.

The lust for shiny finishes on guitars is a kind of mass hysteria. There should be an international effort, perhaps led by the UN, to treat this widespread psychosis.
