John we have real winters here in Southern Illinois, but this year has been quite mild. It reached 65 deg. 4 days ago, right now it's 15 deg with snow. If you don't like the weather here just wait a few hours, it will change.
BTW where in Ca do you live? I lived in the SF eastbay for 30 yr then finally found my way back home.

Because I'm the king of one-ups-manship, I'll post this one.

This is about 3/4 of the way through our latest storm. What really sucked is two nights ago the wind started CRACKING and we had huge drifts that I had to dig out. Oh well, this IS supposed to happen here I suppose.
John, I think maybe they should change the name to Cold, CA

Al, I lived in Fremont for 15 years and then moved here to Cool. We're in the heart of the gold country about 10 minutes from Coloma (Sutters mill where gold was discovered in 1848) in the Sierra Foothills. It has been in the 70's here for the last week and then the jet stream dropped down and now we got snow, sort of anyway we actually only got 2 inches so it'll be gone in no time.

I know Don, but that's why I live here and why I didin't move further up the hill. Snow is pretty to look at but I don't need it.

I wish I had been into lutherie when I lived in cal. There is only one other luthier that I am aware of within 100 miles. Learning would have been much easier with others to visit and learn from.

Paul, that slide, to get down from your workshop, looks pretty neat. I never thought of that.

John, great shot. Why don't you use this picture as a background for your labels? It's an artistic view, and with that snow would lend credence to "Cool, Ca."

Or not--but I'd give it a thought. In fact, if you don't want it, I might use it for my labels.

Actually I do use picture of my shop as a background for my label but I like this one too. A little more panoramic, although I'll have to move the old beater out of the way.

Icy winters are a lot tougher than snowy ones, especially if they last for 6 months,,it's hard to retrieve grannie's dentals when she slips and her teeth fly directly in the snow bank!

Reminds me of the time I was staying in Placerville while racing the Hangtown Nationals. Woke up on race day to find snow everywhere including the long uphill driveway. It took forever to dig out and the result is I missed my scheduled practice time. Fortunately, they allowed me to catch the last few minutes of a different class’s practice. Just didn’t expect to get snowed in like that in Placerville.

We had the warmest January on Record hitting +9 Celcius (49F) All sorts of problewms as a result such as Ice roads not possible because of thin ice meaning all sorts of communities couldn't get their yearly supplies. Now we are finnally getting the cold as it's been -48C (-55F) for the past few days. This is the time of year things are supposed to start warming up and we all go ice fishing.

I have a little creek on the back of my property and one of these days I plan on giving that a try, after all we are in the watershed of the motherload. I don't plan on a career change but I used to do quite a bit of snipeing with my dad as a kid. It's always exciting to see that little sparkle in the bottom of the pan.

Konacat, lived in Placerville for 2 years before buying in Cool, We had snow several time a year although not much, it was more than I wanted. P-ville is about a thousand feet higher than I am.John How38767.5038310185

According to many full time luthiers, the money's not great anyway, so maybe you could pan part time, you never now, there could be one more motherload out there.
