<gulp> it's not nearly so nice looking as many I've seen here as first efforts. But I had no woodworking experience hardly at all, and I actually built it from raw lumber. The only purchased parts were the tuners, shell inlay strips & dots, and fretwire. It was quite an experience.

...Sure Hesh... I'm game... I just finished the binding this afternoon! This is my one and only, so far... She's not finished though... Does that matter?

Hesh, that's pretty cool... In '72 that was a Friday... I always joke it was the worst luck my poor folks ever had!

I'll post mine. It's ugly up close (really bad work on the binding and the
finish), but it sounds like a dream. Best part of it is the neck, but then
again I bought that from Warmouth!

Oh yeah... (it's an electric)

Unless we're talking about first stringed instrument in general, not just
guitar...in which case my first is a flat-top a-style mandolin from a kit.
Painted blue sparkle. Horrible, nearly unplayable fret job, equally bad
nut, an inexplicably wide neck. Even so, it gets put through its paces
form time to time.

So far I seem to be good at making nice sounding but unfortunate
looking instruments ;-). Guess that's better than the other way around.

Hesh, after reading your question above, i remembered that i naively showed my first try when i joined here and how i felt bad afterwards cuz it didn't have the beauty that more experienced woodworkers have put in theirs. However, i would probably show it naively again because that guitar has something special written on the inside of the top and is dedicated to a name that only me and my wife knows. I would only do it to send a message to the novice as to say " Don't fear mistakes, it's part of the learning, don't rush, go slow and it'll go faster than you think ". When i look at my guitar alone, i find her very pretty because i remember what i've went through to achieve it with the little knowledge i had so if you say that this exercise is no laughing matter, than i'm in.

Serge, you realy are a great soul. I too remember the heart ache that went into my first build every time I look at it, cracked back and all the burn marks inside, two necks (not a double neck).... oh I'll save the stories for the next Hesh post about the first.

So, Yes I will post my first. It's on another guitar forum anyway, in their archives. You know the one. Rod True38782.0734837963

I say heck yeh,, I am not finished with it yet though, but I did post my first instrument, a dulcimer. I will post my first guitar for two reason, first no matter what I will be proud, and second to hear from others what I should have done. I'm here to learn..

your first always has a special place in your heart...... at first you are so amazed by the fact you have made this thing, and it even sounds half decent, you dont notice the gaps in the binding, or the blotches in the finish, or the hump in the fingerboard, or the lift in the bridge!!

but if you didnt feel like that about your first, why would you build another???

I'll do it, why not? Now 6 years later my guitars STILL don't look as good as some of the first builds I see here, but what the hey...

Heck yes. Like many other said, it ain't as good as the later ones (for electrics...there are no 'later ones' for the acoustics quite yet), and some of the firsts here are frighteningly beautiful, but yes.

I'll put up a couple. I don't know if I'll post any real closeups of certain spots on the binding...

Funny thing is, my first is still not done. My second is done, and my third, fourth, and fifth are all in the works. I guess I'm kind of a non-linear guy.

My first should be done within a couple weeks. I started it more than five years ago!

Todd. it's all good, i'm pretty sure it will be as awesome as the one Kiwi Craig showed us here. Different people, different skills and different learning = different results!

Thanks Rod for the kind words my friend, it feels better to be understood, you rock also dude!Serge Poirier38782.2879861111

Mine too, but I had woodworking experience which makes it even worse. Only I'll bet it's no where near as nice as Don's first effort. Downright ugly!! Bobc38782.2935416667
