Has anyone used either the plain or flamed torrefied maple from Stew Mac and do they have a picture with the finish so I can see how dark it gets?

I used some roasted maple to make some laminated neck blanks. It is darker than what Stewmac is selling, but I don't know if torrefied and roasted are the same process with different names, or just different. I can post a picture if you like.

Whatever stew mac sells you more likely can find elsewhere cheaper. I'd shop around. Everyone's jumping on the torrefied wood rave.

I'm no expert, but I've been reading up on this after seeing lots of torrefied wood guitars at NAAM. "Roasting" is non-specific, but implies just cooking something in an oven. It can drive off moisture and darken wood. Torrefaction is done in a special kiln, with a controlled low-oxygen atmosphere. After all the moisture and volatiles in the wood a driven off, a small amount of water is re-introduced, at least in tonewoods. It's not a DIY process.

I was shown a full sized body blank of torrefied saplele, it felt like it weighed as much as balsa wood.

I asked a couple of builders where they were getting it, but they wouldn't say.

David we had a set here not from Stewmac but from our supplier and it looked like walnut. Sold it in one day. We will be carrying a full line of spruce and we will probably try walnut and maple.
