Anyone using this cutter in their drill press from LMI?? I've considered buying one--is there an advantage using it over the foredom with the Stewmac base rosette cutter? Seems simple, just not sure of it would cut cleaner, so before spending $175, I thought I'd ask.

little tough initially to setup, but once done it is better than dremel or other tools IMH. Takes less than a minute to put top on drill and cur channel. Very clean cuts at good depth. Just need to make sure it is setup and drill is setup so quill (sp) is prepindicular to table.

I think if you were making the same rosette over and over and over it would be great.

I have looked at it before too.

I like the results and the time it takes to cut a rosette....great for repetitive same exact size rosettes because is a major pain to setup! It cuts clean and fast but it will takes a few frustrating attempts to set it up right!

If you decide to get one make sure to try first on scrap wood!

I have one and I have never used anything better. It's as good or better
than any other jig out there for repeating a standard rosette.

One thing I might suggest is installing some x-acto blades on the inside and outside of the rosette cut. It will offer a much cleaner cut than the chisels that scoop out the wood.

I think you have about got it Hesh

I looked at this tool, but I tend to do a lot of different rosettes so decided it wasn't for me, if you use a three ring rosette with standardised ring dimensions then I reckon it would be ideal.

There is a version by luthier tools that looks easier to adjust but from memory it is around $300

I'm with John Mayes...(well, not right now, right now I'm at home... )...but I have the LMI and love it, and even changing the configuration to a different rosette style (not too often) the guaranteed result I get from the tool is worth the time re-configuring...Crowduck, I'm intrigued...what tool is Martin selling? Sounds like maybe it's a hardware store type flycutter? For the $$ I can't see anything more substantial and the LMI is nothing if not substantial! Just my humble opine...

I had it and wasn't able to use it. It didn't come with cutters, and I didn't
realize that.

Yes, the Martin tool is a flycutter. Don't know if it's 'hardware store' quality. I used a flycutter in a luthier school I attended for cutting rosette channels, and soundhole. I was impressed by its ease of use, and the quality of the cuts. Results may vary with brand/quality of the flycutter of course, and the drill press.

John Greven made me some cutters, but they ended up not fitting. I'm
pretty sure I sold it. I know I don't have it now.

The LMI didn't come with cutters? Mine did! I wonder if that was a mistake in the s/h dept?
