Thanks Hans. That information is very helpful. I can see how adding the black creates a three color burst effect.

Hope it helps, Richard.
Here's a couple of photos I found, the first, my booth at one of the last IBMA festivals I went to.

Next is a photo, maybe 10-12 years ago of Frank Wakefield at our house for his 70th birthday party with one of my F5C's.

Hans,

That is very helpful. Thank you. I still haven't started the finish but I just bought an Iwata airbrush so I'm ready to go.

One more quick question. How long do you wait between coats of color?

I found I could apply another "coat" as soon as the coat was dry. Had to wait longer with water as a solvent, with alcohol, it was much quicker, but not healthy for me. With water, a heat gun would help evaporate the moisture in the wood.
Don't use aniline dye as it fades with sun and time.

Sorry John, trouble at the posting site. Had to switch all the codes from .org to .cc. Will take a while...

No problem, John...
Here's a mandolin I haven't seen in 17 years. Looks well cared for.

Just wrote to tell me it still sounds great and to have it appraised for insurance.

Must be nice to see one of your children after all of these years. All grown up and so well mannered.

Because the finish I used was so fragile, I was used to seeing them more beat up than this guy's above. So long as they were still in one piece, they were good with me. Folks used to be embarrassed to show them to me. My feeling was they couldn't be more beat up than Bill Monroe's...

Like Bill, he never was swayed by another instrument in 17 years. That's attachment. Still, it is refreshing to see someone that knows how to take care of an instrument in this "thow-away age"...

Did you have any apprentices? Also did you publish any material?
How are you doing now?

Shop wasn't big enough to have 2 people working in it.
Take a look at my website. I do have 2 books that I wrote.
Have severe COPD at this point and shop is half sold off. Haven't built an instrument in 4 years. A couple of the old guitars are being put together for me.

BTW, Frank Wakefield was about to go on stage (84 years old!!) last week, when he hit his head and cut it open. Being a trooper, Frank went on stage and played 2 sets, then went to the hospital and got stitched up!

Looking through these has me thinking of building one. I have been building guitars for 3 years and have finished 4 with 4 under construction. Time for something new. Looking at plans

It's a really large chunk of learning to bite off. For some reason I started with F models, but it's probably better to start with an A model. Good luck!

The F5 prints by Adrian Minarovic are the best. Siminoff prints are good too.
