I'll be selling some lutherie-related items for the wife of a friend of mine who died not long ago. The one item I need help pricing is an Arthur Overholtzer dread form. I am not sure of it's value or whether or not this one is complete, so I'd appreciate any help you can provide.

It's a neat thing. I have two pieces, the outside mold and the inner form that contains a coil to provide the heat for bending. Looks like it can be made to run with a standard appliance cord, though there was not one with the unit.

Ideas on the value? If anyone has interest, feel free to PM me with an offer. Shipping won't be cheap, as it's heavy. For a good cause.

Thanks Don. Mike was just starting to build guitars. He was a superb player and a professional woodworker, so I am sure he would have made beautiful guitars. Until he made his own, Mike flattered me by playing one I built for him.

What a kind story about your friend...I'm sure I would've liked him if we'd met...I hope when my time rolls around I've lived a life that would make me worthy of a friend such as you...regarding the mold, check with Charlie Hoffman...he has, or had an Overholzer in his shop, and would probably be able to comment intellegently on it's worth...

Overholtzer's book was the first guitar construction book I read, back in the formative years. I have a real sentimental spot for his stuff and would like to own the mold if for no other reason that to just put it on the shelf as a collectors item. (though I would definitely use it) How much do you want for it?

John, I see it the same way. To some of us, Overholtzer's set-ups (he made a classical set too) have value beyond function. I thought about buying it myself for the same reason, but I prefer the idea of releasing Mike's stuff out in the world.

I have some recollection of one of these getting a fair bit of attention on eBay a few years ago, but I don't remember what it went for. Plus, I'd rather pass it along "within the family" so to speak.

If anyone cares to toss out what they see as a fair value, I'd appreciate it.

Charlie Hoffman has some of the Overholtzer's molds and might be a good person to ask Bob. As you, I believe many an OLFer would love to have these classic guitarmaking tools. I haven't a clue of their true value. Did you plug in the mold to see if it heats up?

The bender is missing the "shoe" that clamps down at the waist. It had a
separate heating element.

I twisted the +/- from a salvaged power cord I had onto the connectors and the element heated right up. I'll include that cord, though finding the right connector to attach would be best. Looks to me like the female side of a typical small appliance cord would work, so long as there is 1/2" between the + and -.

I'll open the bid at $75.

John, this isn't an official auction until Lance & Bob say it is.
Besides, I bid $100 if it is...and it will go for a lot more than that I would expect.

Whoever wants it is going to have to cough up a lot more than that!

I don't think it would be right to start an auction, but I would like to find this a home. So if it is okay with Lance and Brock, I'll propose this.

Seeing as John Hall starts his auctions for outside molds at $85, I'll field offers at or above twice that ($170). So if you're interested in this, please send me a PM or email <steidlguitars at yahoo dot com> with your offer. I'll ship it to the highest bidder this weekend.

If no one offers, then I'll lower the minimum.

Buyer pays shipping and all proceeds go to Cate, Mike's wife.

I hope that seems fair.

   I have seen them go for $150 to $550 on ebay. If you are looking for a bidder I think ebay or here would be a good way.
    I am not sure on the element but I assume it is in working order.
    These are not cheap and you may be more than surprised on ebay. Please keep me posted to the sale as I am an avid collector

I recall an asking price of about $350.00 in the 1970s when Art was offering these for sale.

As a collectble it should fetch a good deal more than that.IMHO
