Wow I've never seen Sipo that looks quite like that. It looks so much like Imbuia that I have built with.

We are moving to Anacortes, WA! My shop is completely torn apart in preparation. It took me a good while to get the layout just right, so taking it all apart is bittersweet. The new shop space is 500 square feet bigger and comes complete with a bar and kegerator. Imagine a 1200 sqft English pub vibe. It’s currently very dark down there and will require fresh paint before we can start setting up the new space.

I did manage to get finish on a current build before the spray booth started coming apart. I used Enduro var for the first time and I think I like it... I am definitely looking forward to loosing the blue cast found in acrylic lacquer.

Looking forward to posting more shots after buffing.

Here's what the back looks like. The figuring has more of a 3D look to it in person. This is one of three sets from two sources that all look like this. I've seen some mahogany with figuring like this and it's sometimes referred to as plum pudding and other times as vein figuring.

I'm managing a craft beer bar in an effort to save money before I attempt a foray into full time professional lutherie. Your new shop sounds like my dream; get some Hill farmstead or maybe some Pliny the Elder on draught if you're west coast and you'll keep your visiting customers very happy.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Sollod can you describe the rosette in that maple guitar?

The rosette is a radial design of end grain of black palm with no purfling between the pieces.

That spruce has silk in waves! What is it? Very Cool. I tried some Adirondack once that was kinda like that, but it kept splitting along the grain, so I threw it out.

I have a piece of Paradox Walnut roughed out for a violin. I like to rough things out and let them set a while. I like starting new. Then I go back and finish it up.
The Walnut should look great when finished; the flame is very deep and 3d looking.

I was lucky to score three matching back and side billets to resaw myself. Spruce is lutz. Yum yum!

Ken, I've never seen a walnut violin. Looks cool!

My teen son and I are building a Tele, using Fralin PUPs too, humbucker at the neck. He'll play it in his band, Hanford (after the Superfund nuclear cleanup site here in WA). I'm as excited as he is about hearing it.

Just finished a Torres-based classical—EIR/Lutz— that I'm very happy with. I'll have it at the NW Handmade Instrument Show in Portland first weekend of May.

Getting this maple 00 and bubinga parlor into finish. The 00 will get a burst and typical shading. Keeping the parlor in clear.

Busy with scratchbuild #3 - - - cherry/padauk laminated neck, curly cherry body, 'ebony' binding, 12-fret neck on 14-fret body. Having a dandy time with neck angles. Lots of wood moving around, a forest of clamps to establish final neck angle before the top goes on (and while I can still tune the slope on the body). Coming along, no irreversible mistakes (them's the only things that are actual mistakes, says me).

Danny, I don’t usually care for paint, but that is killer.
Pretty brave on the piano black. No forgiveness there.
