I used rattle cans on a couple, usually took more than 1 can, not quite 2.
Might get 2 guitars from 3 cans.

StewMac says for an acoustic guitar one can of sealer and 4 to 6 cans of gloss. Its been a long time since I've finished a guitar with rattle cans but that seems about right. Remember that (1) the finish is a lot thinner (more reduced) than if you are shooting from a gun and (2) part of the contents of the can is propellant.

Also, of course, the type of wood and how well is was pore filled will make a difference, and obviously, the number of coats that you feel you need.

That's kinda why I wanted some feedback . I know what Stewmac says , but then again they want to sell Lacquer. I know the wood makes a difference. However I was thinking 2 maybe 3 cans tops .

there is no simple answer but I have just done some experimenting with rattle cans for the kit builders . I have used Behlen stew mac and minwax from home depot.
Minwax outperformed them all. I used lmi water filler and aqua coat for the filler. Stew mac special walnut and dark walnut stain. Bullseye transparent shellac for the sealer.
Sanded to 220 grit on rosewood 180 on mahogany. Too fine your may have adhering issues. Once sanded I sealer the top and stained the back and side. Necks were done separate from the bodies. After staining i just used a paper towel to apply sealer. Did the dark lmi water filler first. used aqua coar later , sealed again with shellac. I also did one just lacquer on top. I sprayed 5 coats allowed to set over night sanded with 320 and sprayed 5 more coats leveled with 600 sparyer another 5 in all this took about 4 cans. Then level sanded buffed and polished. The buffing was mazzerna 16 and 18 and got very glossy. Deft didn't preform well cracked in about 3 months. Total build was about 8 thou sanded down was about .006 when done, After the 2nd level sanded I did drop fills. Was very happy with the results.

I'm curious about the Minwax too. How did it out perform the others?

I don't do Nitro much anymore but have used the Stewmac stuff to pretty good success in the past. And I always keep a can of it around for touch up repair work.

As a bit of sideways info I am finishing a smallish bodied classical and find I have used about 1 litre of nitro. I think I've laid it on a bit thick but may have use more if I find myself with a sand through

I use Minwax gloss lacquer it is the nitro
I used shellac as a sealer.

Here is what I know from my experience
Deft Not good for guitars ,
Belhen is ok but had too many issues with the way it sprayed . Would spit and cause bumbs
Stew man same issue
I used other brands that are no longer in business so I would bother talking about them

The can application of Minwax is superior to any that I used in the past. Good flow out fast cure.

As any can be careful how close you are to what your spraying as you can form tiny bubbles that will show.

Level sanding Minwax did well but works best using wet sanding.
Buffing glossed up nicely
Shrink back very little about the same as HVLP spray

Seems less chippy when routing for bridge.

The hardest thing about any finish is prep. So sometimes the application isn't the issue it is the prep.

I used LMI fillers the walnut water based and the aqua coat.
I even used them together and both were done using shellac as a sealer.

The results are very uniform and I am happy with the result though it does need a good buffer and compound to get the best
results. I use buffing compound from Jescar . I also use 3m finesse it and maquires swirl remover.

One must be patient but I was able to level sand about 5 days out . The material in the can has more thinner than I would use in a
sprayer but the flow out was very good on the minwax.

This is just about rattle cans but the nozzel used on minwax was very good even when I got to the end of the can. I used about 3 cans on a body and 1 can on the neck ( satin on the neck )

I sprayed about 5 to 7 coats on the first day allowed 3 days and level sanded using 400 to 600 using a ROS and wet sanding. I then drop filled where I needed to and applied 4 coats . I allowed about 45 min to 2 hr between coats and got perfect weld in and no lines show between any coats.
again level sanded here on the 2nd sanding 600 to 2000 grit.
again drop filled and applied 3 coats left set about a week
didn't see much difference then when I let set 3 days. Level sanded to 3000 grit buffed and polished. Got a very good gloss

I also had spitting issues with Behlen cans, until I read that you can eliminate the problem by placing the cans in warm water for a few minutes. Don't remember the temp or time but the solution is out there and it did solve the problem.

That didn't help
I heated it to 140 degree and it didn't spit as much but it still spit. It was also very chippy at the heat stock when setting the tuners and when I opened the top for gluing the bridge.

one thing I didn't tell you was that I only sanded to 180 grit on the top and 220 on the rosewood for adhesion. worked well
