Anyone try this. I want to make a more portable deck than the one I have. I really don't care for the threaded rod thing and I think pipe clamps would make for a more easily adjustable deck. Am I missing something?

This can't be my own genius, someone must have tried it unless the threaded rod scheme is perfect as it is? I haven't owned one so I'm not sure if it's a PITA or not. Is one setting good for everything you use it for? I ask because I was considering using it for closing the box as well. If I use clamps for that then I guess the standard deck is fine and easy enough to build.

If you look at Kathy Matsushita’s excellent website, I think she used pipe clamps for some fixtures like go bar deck.

Find Kathy Matsushita's website, if it is still up. She has one made with pipe clamps.

It will be heavy with pipes and pipe clamps. so if you want to be able to move it around, you might want to go a different direction.

Take a look at this one I made, if you want to be able to switch between gluing braces on plates and closing boxes:

Thanks Don, I love that! The only thing I might change is to pin the rods into the base somehow or cut slots for disassembly. Maybe some threaded inserts would be OK. I want to move this from my basement in the winter to an air conditioned spare room in the summer. In the summer I would disassemble it after every use because it's a guest room for my daughters when they visit.

Nice one Don. Missed it when you first posted. I'm in the "Upgrade the shop functionality" mode. The Go Bar Deck is needing some love. This might be a great way to go about it.

There are threaded rods inside the plastic conduit. They thread into T nuts in the base of the go bar deck. So, you could definitely take the whole thing apart. The torsion box would have to stay one piece (obviously), but the rest should break down without too much trouble.

I think the torsion box is pretty important to prevent warping of the bottom deck. 30 go bars create a lot of pressure.

+1 for torsion box.

I used Kathy's method, then went with this to lift the base. Quick to change.

I use pipe clamps in my go-bar deck, bottom and top are just 3/4” plywood. It works fine for my needs - my shop is small, I build guitars & ukes one at a time, but also do other projects. Set up and tear down are relatively quick and it packs away small.

Each piece of ply measures about 2’ x 2’. The bottom piece has pipe flanges attached at the corners, and the pipes screw into those. The top ply piece has 1” dia holes drilled through at the corners for the black pipe to pass through. The top ply is sandwiched between hose clamps around each piece of black pipe (below to hold it up) and the “non-screw” part of the pipe clamp (on top to hold it down).

There is slight deflection in the plywood, but it works fine for me. My go-bars are 1/8” fiberglass kite rods, 2” long. I think I have about 24 rods, and use all of them at the same time in my glue ups.

I’ll try to set it up and get some pictures tomorrow.
