What's the tap tone of the bocote like?

Thanks for taking us along for the ride Brian. I like the way you join the neck block extension to the upper transverse brace to make a strong unit. Do you plan to bolt the fingerboard extension down to that extended block?

Not on this one, though I am heading in that direction. This will have the extension glued to the top.
I understand that movement after stringing had been an issue with some bolted extensions.

Maybe movement or buzzing could be a problem if it is not a strong and secure bolt-down system (e.g. a single bolt just into the FB extension itself would be pretty weak). But if you do it right it is a great method. The main ingredients for success seem to be some mass glued to the FB extension which fits into a routed pocket(s) in the soundboard and neck block extension, plus having two bolts. Trevor Gore’s method works well.

I have had success with the kit from Luthiers Cool Tools which does the same thing, and is very easy to execute. You could do it with the neck block you have already installed.

The set I have is like cardboard. Or Walnut. Sure is a pretty wood though. I look forward to using it............

I’m building a Bocote and Italian Spruce guitar, and I really enjoy working with the bocote. It bends beautifully — smooth, fair curves without any hints of faceting or potato-chipping. Plus, it smells wonderful — earthy and medicinal (in a good way). The tap, which seems fairly insignificant to my mind compared to the soundboard/bracing, is close to the other “ote” wood — ziricote, though slightly thuddier.

Yours is looking great, Bri. I love your integrated extension support/transverse brace.

The first guitar I ever built I used Bocote. That was 1990 :O I used it because it was cheap and I didn't want to learn to build gutiars with expensive wood. And it was available at my local hardwood dealer. I've been seeing more and more of it lately so I wonder if it's finally catching on after all these years

Seems like perfect guitar wood to me. Looks great, easy to work with and so on.

That's an interesting truss structure you have there too.

A bit more progress on this, working on the neck.
The whole tap tone thing is bit of voodoo for me, not sure I really know what I am hearing or how it really effect the final product, but this top is the most “musical” that I have done to this point. I am guessing that the cedar has a lot to do with it.
