As Freeman said my breakthrough was to bend my bindings with my sides. And I use some pretty tight cutaways. I also use reinforced packing tape which allows the use a fair bit of force if needed.

Another thing that I don't think has been mentioned is to relieve the edge of the binding that goes into the rebate in case you missed a bit of fuzz etc.

Finally I did a mod on my bending iron to help do the vertical bending at the waist and to a smaller extent at the cutaway. With a fairly high arch on the back this bit is crucial.

So not quite answering the OP's question but avoiding the gaps really is the trick. In the end because there are ALWAYS a few gaps CA does it for me given plenty of shellac sealing of the top.
