I was wondering how luthiers felt about parting with thier creation, I bet its hard in certain cases but if you cant part with the guitars after they are finished, then your not really a luthier I guess.
and I thought I "wood" ask OLF - if you could have just one great player
{and Im going to have to go with >alive only< on this one}
exclusively play one of your guitars.
Who would it be?
Its a hard question,
Seeing as how Rory Gallagher is gone, I am going to go with Martin Taylor, I just love the way he digs in.

I do have a secondary motive for this question -
This questionaire will give me the skinny on some cool artists I have never heard of before but should check out.
for instance i have never heard of Howard Emerson

Hey Charlie,

I guess when you feel you are getting better at building these things and you are confident the next one will be better, than you can let go of the last build a little easier. Not that I'm at that point yet but just guessing.

As far as my choice for player, I'd hope some kid plays one of my creations and then gets famous.

Tommy Emmanuel for me. Except I might cringe at seeing him scrape away a labor-intensive finish from his percussive style.

Right now, I'm just getting a kick out of seeing my sons and brothers enjoying their guitars.

I don't plan on ever really selling a guitar, but I think if Pepe Romero played one of my guitars and liked it, I'd be very, very happy.

Yes! Tommy Emmanuel is fantastic! Im wondering how many new school players will get picked by these old school luthiers, the acoustic two handers/slappers and such, its not really my cup of tea overall, but some are incredible John Butler/Justin King etc.

Here is an exert form my sales CD. It pretty much explains how I feel about each guitar that leaves my shop.

"I view each guitar I build much as a parent views a child. It is some what emotional and bitter sweet to see a newly built guitar leave the shop. After all, I have spent a hundred or more hours shaping its character. And like any parent that has spent years raising a child, and sends them out into the world on their own for the first time, I have grand hopes, and anticipate great things of each of my instruments, as well as for the clients that play them."

If I was to pick a deam artist to exclusively play my guitars,it would be James Taylor, or maybe Steve How of Yes fame

So Funny I have not thought about Howard for a while, he and I worked together as salesmen at Sam Ash in NYC in the 90's we had alot of fun together, he ruled the acoustic room. Glad to see he is doing so well.

Brad Paisley.   Hands down.
Sure, we'd all like to have Tommy Emmanuel playing our guitars, and Phil Keaggy, and Doyle Dykes etc etc, but I think I'd rather have someone more commercially recognized playing my guitars exclusively, at least if I were in this full time (and not retired from it.)

What I like about Brad is he's not just a great player, he's also a fantastic singer and songwriter. He is also very well liked and respected in the music industry, he's a member of the Grand Ol Opry, and that says volumes for his character.


Oh...and he's married to a Williams!


My other choice would be Vince Gill, who is not only a great player, but has the best voice in the business, at least as far as I'm concerned.

Both excellent choices.

I think I'd go for Eric Clapton. That would make any subsequent builds sell a lot faster.

I'm not really a player, so the greatest joy I get is hearing a good player bring it to life. No problem at all parting with it. Each one is unique, so each one deserves a unique player. A local folk fingerstylist, Lis Bigwood, really lit up one of my quitars. Not to be immodest, but until she played it, I had no idea that it would sound so good.
