Hi Mike,
The Corian is not essential. The magnets I used were relatively small so the Corian was used to increase the surface area they would apply force to. I used 1/2 inch thick Corian and it worked O.K. with the magnets I had.
If you do decide to mount the 1/4 inch thick magnets in Corian blocks, I would thin the Corian to 5/16ths. This will allow you to add magnets to the back of the strip if you find you need more clamping pressure.
On occasion I have wrapped the cauls in plastic wrap. With it's short open time, sometimes I am sloppy with the hide glue and I want to avoid gluing the caul to the cleat which I am gluing to the side of the guitar. [headinwall]

Well, it seems my source for magnets is rather expensive! 10 for 50$ or so. Is this the kind you all use?

Clay, I have a source for the Corian (cabinet maker) might as well as take advantage of it.
