More than 10 years ago a friend bought a quite large piece of Honduras Mahogany from a boatbuilder who went out of business. It has sat in his garage since 2010. He realized he was not going to use it and is offering it for sale. It is 122" long, 17-3/4 wide, and a full 4" thick. It is straight and flat, has a small area of sapwood at one end, and 4 knots that do not go through to the other side. It is approximately 60 board feet and he is asking $600. It is located on the Eastern Shore of Maryland 40 minutes from the Bay Bridge at Annapolis.

Should be well seasoned by now. Doesn't have to be all necks, either. When guys like me look at it, I'm thinking one piece solid body blanks. Or you could resaw part of it for back and side sets. There are no hard rules, it could end up as anything.

Do some rough math. How many neck blocks, 3" x 4" x 30" can you get out of the plank? Divide the $600 by how many blocks, how much for each? Going rate is $100- for a perfect Q-sawn neck block. You won't saw the whole thing up for neck blocks, but it will give you an idea of the value of the plank.

Nice slab of wood

Considering how it is getting harder to find long, wide, and thick pieces of mahogany and other slow growing hardwoods it seems a shame to cut it up into a bunch of small pieces.
The local hardwood dealer is asking $25/bd. ft. for wide and thick mahogany, so it is certainly priced right.
Narrower stock of 16/4 is going for $12/ bd. ft. (which is fine for guitar parts).

Yup that price is very generous for that hunk of Hog. I'd be on that in an instant if it was in my neighborhood. And like Pile said, I see back/side sets and solid bodies in that wood too.

Sold to a furniture maker

Sorry it didn't work out.

My mahogany stash came from a furniture maker/sculptor who was closing shop several years ago. Got a bunch of nice stuff at a price that couldn't be touched today--some really wide pieces of thinner (5/4) stock--maybe 40 inches across, and I'm glad I did.

For ukulele necks, guitar heel blocks, tailblocks and the like, I bought a lot of neck cutout pieces from Martin back in the 90's. They were selling the scraps from bandsawing necks for a dollar apiece, and I bought as many as I could fit into my car. Again, Glad I did!
