Just noticed, now that the SM site is back after maintenance, that on the fret position calculator page the compensation caveat no longer says +/- 0.030", but only that for different action and string gauges "you may need to slightly adjust the locations given" - no guidance is given.
Are they frightened of being sued?

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Just a P.S. in case you are not aware, the Mottola site also offers a compensation calculator, which includes inputs for string gauge and action at the 12th fret ++

Didn't the old fret calculator only give one value (center point of the saddle) for the compensation? Now I see they are giving a value for bass E and treble e for acoustics.

I don't believe so. I used it only for acoustics and remember bass and treble compensation being shown.
