HELP!! I think I have a new commission for a double neck, 6 and 12 string. All of the design elements are up to me to the approval stage, including wood selection and all that. Sorry Craig, he wants a vine in the fret boards too, I would rather having schooling fish!

I am hoping that some of you will have some brace pictures/advice that I can consider. Also, what about body size/shape?

Thanks in advance, again!

Shane

I suggest you start an e-mail friendship with Mike Doolin. He's a very nice guy and would probably be willing to help you out with bracing and the like.

Good luck!

Shane, you lucky dog! A double neck, I'm just doing a replacement neck for a Wal-Bass. I'm not complaining, cuz I get to fingerprint the guys Wal all over and build one for meself in the process.

Paying jobs are really cool. Then we worry whether or not we can pull them off to folks satisfaction. I'm sure you'll be able. Of course, as always, we want pics!

Yeah, are you Lutzing this baby?

Shane, congrats! Sounds like a fun project. I'm pretty sure Tony Karol made a double neck. If so, he's always been very gracious with his time.
Good luck.

Thanks for the encouragement and the suggestions, I will follow them up! Yup, a Lutz top, not sure what I will use for the back and sides. Maybe some of your pommel sapele Bruce...

Thanks again

Shane

Shane -- Tony made a double neck Koa that you can see on his website. I got to play it when he had it back for some set-up work.   He posted sometime ago a picture of his bracing pattern.

Congrats on the commission.

vines soon.
I really don't find them personally appealling, but from a design point of view, and to show others that yes I can in fact do one, I am starting to think I need to do a blow out vine just to have one around.

Congrats on the comission!

If anyone wants a vine that will make eyes widen let me know. I not going to mess around on my first!
I actually have ideas for one.. but this isn't a thread hijack! Just PM me!

Yes you are WORTHY!!
Obviously whoever wants you to build it is pretty impressed with the guitars made by you that he has seen! Here's the opportunity to try the next step in guitar making and have someone else pay for it!

All you realy need to do a double neck is a lot of this

You can do it, You can do it, You can do it, You can do it, You can do it

Thanks again for the encouragement! . It will indeed be a fun a project. I looked back at Tony Karol's pics and thread on his double neck and there is some good info, both on design and stress areas to aware of. Rod, I am hoping that I don't need too much "bubble stick" to hold things together...but ya never know! Once I get things moving along I will certainly post the progress and the pitfalls/sucesses. I have a couple of (maybe three) other builds in line before I can start this one in a bid way. But I will certainly be doing the research and design work over the next while. I am still most appreciative for other other thoughts on it thogh!

Thanks my friends!

Shane

Yesterday I e-mailed Mike Doolin and outlined taht I am new guitar builder and told him waht I was up to and asked if he would be interested in sharing some design stuff on a double neck. This morning I wake up to a great explanation and some pics! His information, coupled with the stuff that Tony posted in an earlier thread (they actually jive, the two designs!) and I think that I am ready to get to drawing and laying out this guitar (I actually thicknessed the top I will use last night)!

So a HUGE thanks to Mike and Tony for sharing their experiences and helping out on this project! And to the rest of you for pointing me in the right direction!

Shane

Shane,

I hope you left the top a little bit thicker and picked a really good stiff piece of spruce, because there is about 350 pounds of pressure pulling on that top.

I've done five doublenecks, the first was for Richard Leo Johnson. The necks were more parallel. Mike Doolin's doubleneck for Justin King was also quite parallel, and the two necks were both six strings). Since then, all the others I've built have had a more splayed neck for better playability for normal players. (Richard and Justin are not your average players). So you might consider this aspect in your design.

The other thing that you might consider in wood choice is that if it is a highly figured wood for the back and sides that in using a wood like this, the back can stretch (trust me - stretch)and cause the guitar to need a neck reset and you can't figure out why...

One other plan to make is where you will get your case. You'd be surprised how time consuming it can be to get a custom case for this type of instrument.

Good luck and enjoy!

Lance McCollum

A case, well I was wondering the same thing there Shane.

Give Kris Datt in Richmond a call, he may make one for you or at least he would know who would.

Thanks for this Lance. I have a very stiff Lutz Spruce top picked out. Right now it is still in two pieces that are thickness sanded to about .190. I will glue them up soon and let them sit for a couple of weeks or more before I sand level (probably to about .160) and then do the rosette. Mike Doolin warned me about that issue of pull also. His suggestion was a buttress from the neck block to cleats at the waist. His butress is significant! I was thinking about talking Jim West and Mark Swanson about a carbon fibre version of a buttress and I probably will, even though I have never used the stuff before. Tony Karol's design has a more splayed neck and I too was thinking that would be better as Doolin's for King is quite tight between the necks....Man, I just can't imagine jumping between necks and differnt tunings, I am too confused with a single neck and one tuning!

Anyway, I am still most happy to receive any and all advise, including pictures of the innards of any of these beasts.

Thanks Lance

Shane

Thanks Rod. Does he typically do guitar cases? I guess I could call and see for myself. I will be drawing this up full size so I will be able to send good accurate drawings as I am building.
