The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Pretty cool. Too bad it wouldn't work with all wood species.

That's pretty cool. I wonder how thick the trunks of those cedars can get growing that way.

I've seen a naturally occurring version of this while hiking in the Cascades, but with a smaller number of shoots on the old growth.

I find myself wondering how growing a tree into a specific shape then harvesting it is any different that growing a tree, harvesting it, then making furniture out of it...

A massive amount of a tree's energy is stored in the root system. If you clear cut and kill the underground part of the tree, you have to start over with seedlings that have to devote of a lot of their energy production to the root development. On a small scale. I have seen startling rates of regrowth from trees that died to the ground in the winter, but the roots stayed alive and sent up new shoots. The cited method of timber production might not produce wide boards, but even if it did, my hunch is that they would have very wide growth rings and not be desirable for guitar tops. On the other hand, the total volume of wood production might be greater than from clear cutting and replanting.

In the first few years that may possibly be true, however after that time I think replanting and allowing the trees to grow to maturity would generate more wood production than allowing the sucker growth from stumps.
