I re-glued the binding and held it on for a few days with Blue Painter's Tape. The finish is now discolored as in the photo. I believe it's satin nitro. I have cleaned the surface and the discoloration remains. I think I can detect a slight smoothing of the finish where the discoloration is.

Recommendations on how to fix?

Did you clean with naphtha?

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I cleaned with naptha and the marks are still there. I can find no trace of any substance on the surface.

The adhesive in the 3M blue tape has an ingredient that dissolves nitro lacquer. There’s a warning in very small print inside the core. You may have some finish repair ahead of you.

I did the same thing about 10 years ago before I knew of the hazards of this tape. I was able to polish it out with my buffer.

I believe buffing will polish up satin nitro and change the sheen.

Not necessarily. Most factory satin finishes are achieved by using flattening agent in the finish and polishing this will not change it from satin.
