I've been looking at those. Have you seen both the Premiere and Actives versions? I'm curious how the 2 compare and if the Premiere is worth the extra $200 or so.

I believe you got some bad information from someone. Hiscox has been posting status from time to time on their site. The latest:



With raw materials in short supply (ABS prices have gone through the roof due to supply disruptions), it will take what I believe will be 6 months to a year for the distribution system to refill. Be patient.

I have seen both but it was years ago that I compared. I'm very happy with the active series with the case cover. Zero complaints. They are incredibly light and the adjustable feature seems gimmicky but is actually really nice. Customers have commented approvingly on both of those features and said they use that case for whatever guitar they are traveling with.

Actually maybe a few (minor) complaints- the little pocket inside under the neck is a bit small and the headstock area can feel tight.

They are made for the classical market I believe, and very deep guitars may not work but mine aren't so deep and fit just fine. I was using the Cedar Creek Custom shop before and the lead times got unworkable. I have had a Calton made and it was a wonderful experience, I'd do it again in a heartbeat if asked.

Calton is the best case on the market.

Next up would be Hoffee and Karura. The Karura is actually the highest quality case in terms of construction -- incredible shell, workmanship, and latches -- but I don't like their interior fit in comparison to the Hoffee and Calton. Hoffee's are really nice too but the workmanship is not as good as Calton and definitely not as good as Karura. I used Hoffee for years but they've become really expensive and the Calton is not only a better case but is now cheaper. Saving a couple pounds just isn't worth it.


For lightweight cases, you have Hiscox and Visesnut. Both are really good cases. They aren't as protective as the better flight cases but practically, they really hit the sweet spot for price, quality, and convenience.

I used Ameritage for a while. Heavy cases but well made. They have now gotten quite expensive.

So after having used practically every case on the market over the 15 years I've been building. My case picks are:

1). Calton as my default case

2). Hiscox or Visesnut if someone needs a light case. Visesnut is my preference.

Maybe this shop would be useful for some of you? Ran into them at VIGF…

 This is on their website ; Unfortunately, worldwide shipping costs are very unstable at the moment and we can no longer get a guaranteed price for shipping our cases outside of the UK.

In view of this, we have no choice but to suspend deliveries outside of the UK until we can get this sorted.

I just received a TKL 8800 series case. It came in at the same price as a Hiscox Pro. Between the 2 I prefer the Hiscox, but based on the info in the posts above, this is a moot point.
I have a Cedar Creek case in house that was made for my Model 3 guitar, which is kind of a mini-jumbo shape. The fit is good. A standard OM case would not have fit as well. The interesting thing is that the TKL 8800 and Cedar Creek are essentially identical in construction in terms of wall thickness and arching on the top. The Tolex is different although I could not say which one is better. The Cedar Creek has crushed velvet interior (ooh-la-la) while the 8800 regular velvet. The 8800 comes with a lifetime guarantee. I am sure wear and tear is not covered.
The kicker is Cedar Creek charges shipping while the online retailers who sell TKL usually have free shipping. The 8800 came in right at $260 delivered while the Cedar Creek just a few dollars shy of $400 delivered. The Cedar Creek has been in house for a number of years and I would not be surprised if the price has gone up. Cedar Creek's value lies in making custom fitted cases. But for standard shapes TKL is just as good and way cheaper.

At 71 years old, i am done with the arm stretching cases. For my own personal guitars, i am looking at the Travelites. I don't play out much anymore. Travelites are cheapos, but light.

I like Hiscox cases. I bought one years ago and it is still going strong. Lightweight and well built.
My only caution, based only on this one case,is to check the lining and make sure it is smooth and bump free. Mine has some 2 mm size bumps in the lining that I think put dents in a soft cedar topped guitar when I travelled with it. I could be wrong about the source of the dents, just a caution to check.

I have been using the TKL cases with the arched top. They run about $150. delivered to me.

They are a little "crude", But at my price point (I include the case with all my guitars) I can't justify including a more expensive case.

I have never had a customer who was not happy with these cases.

Occasionally a customer wants a lighter case and in those instances they usually supply their own Reunion Blues case.

I see things from this perspective, as well.

As a player who actually drives to places with my guitar in order to play for people, I can honestly say that I have never needed a case to be more sophisticated or protective than a normal hardshell case, like what TKL sells. I am not to the point of selling my guitars yet, but when I get there, I will include a basic case (like a hardshell TKL or equivalent) in the price, and let the clients know I will be glad to get them a more expensive case if they want one and are willing to pay for it. Things change (obviously) if you fly with your guitar, or actually go on a real tour (i.e., roadies, trucks, buses, etc.). In that case, sure, get a hefty case. But for schlepping in your own car, it's overkill.

I currently have a 3-year-old Martin D45 in the shop that arrived in its original TKL arch top case. Nothing extraordinary, but does the job, even for Martin’s top-shelf model.
