Don't know if anyone has seen it, but apparently luthier extraordinaire Rick Turner died yesterday. I met him at the ASIA convention back in 1990 and got to talk to him over lunch. Great guy and a wealth of knowledge...

Wish I would have had a chance to know him. I listened to his interview by Michael Bashkin and immediately afterward sought out all I could find on YouTube and here. If anyone could share other communities where he shared his knowledge it would be great.

How sad - he was a wonderful guy and very talented. He was also very very friendly, helpful, and would freely share his way of doing things. He also knew everyone in the guitar world. Very interesting person.

One example, is in the late '80s or early '90s, I stopped into the Westwood Music, in West Los Angeles, and he was in the back doing repairs. At that point, I think he was living up in Topanga Canyon, and working on a pickup design (which itself was quite interesting) and some other things, and just filling-in. He had a lot of repair things going on at one time. (I tend to work on one thing at a time, so he was always very impressive). While I was there, talking with him, he took a lid of a small cardboard box, cut out the outline of the bridge, then put some thin foil backed insulation cut the outline of the bridge and put it foil side down, held a heat lamp over it and in minutes he had the bridge off as clean as a whistle (as they used to say) and never missed a beat with all the other things going on. While he worked, he hardly seemed to need to pay attention to what he was doing, he just knew what do. Within a few weeks, I needed to take off a bridge, and his method worked perfectly, even for me.

Rest in Peace Rick and condolences to friends and family. A legend indeed.

Crying face. I loved his spirit of experimentation. I've played around with some of his great ideas.

Never got the opportunity to meet Rick -- but he was indeed a legend in the lutherie community and I heard nothing but kind/positive comments about Rick as a person. He will surely be missed. Best wishes to his family and friends !!!

He has quite a bit of content in the old MIMF Library archive (you have to be signed in to access). A true gentleman and heck of a designer and builder.
