I was wondering whether you folks glue the nut in place on the neck, or just have it fit snugly in the slot?

I've noticed a number of repairpersons "fixing" my guitars by adding a couple of drops...

i put a tiny drop of white glue on the bottom, spread it around a little and set it in place, then I tighten up the strings, that provides the clamping pressure.

I actually put a tiny dot of white glue on the side of the nut toward the
fretboard

Just enough glue to hold it in place. Like Lance said a drop is really all you need. That way it doesn't go anywhere but it will be easy enough to remove and replace if needed.

I try and get as snug a fit as possible and then put a piece of Duck double side tape under the nut.

Dave, You put tape under the Nut?

I make as tight a fit as I can and then put in a few drops of PVA or cyano.

Oh yeah and if youre using cyano..make you wash your hands before
handling any other nuts.kiwigeo38819.0509606482

Yes. The fit of the nut is snug in the first place, and the string pressure on the double sided tape fits it even more snugly. The tape has virtually no thickness and when you want to take the nut out it releases real easy and peels of the bottom of the nut clean as a whistle. I've been doing this for over 2 years now with no problems at all.

I fit the nut in snug; no pressure. Then a few drops of thin CA at the fingerboard/ nut joint. Been doing it this way for 20 years. Remove with a light tap from the F.B. side.

I thin out some titebond a little and apply a couple small drops.

Dave I would wonder if that might have some affect on sound although I imagine it would be very marginal. I've used white glue and CA but have stuck to white glue. Tight fitting nut and then a little glue holds it great yet comes out real easy. Orriginally I didn't use any glue but customers didn't like this.

I don't think the sound is impacted one iota. I play the guitars a lot to make sure everything is fine before I finally put the tape on and then play them afterwards.

That Duck stuff can be pretty tenacious. Once in a small travel guitar I made the mistake of putting some on the bridgeplate caul while the bridge was clamped on. It took me 3 days of painful contorted wriggling to break the glue bond and get the caul off Dave White38819.5538425926

Snug fit, no glue. If it can come out with no strings on, without some persuassion, then it's not snug enough. We don't glue in the saddle do we?

Reminds of a guy I know who spent 12 months chasing a buzz on his
classical and then discovered the bridge caul still sitting under the top....
