Sorry for another wood ID thread. I got this some time back from a luthier. At the time I thought it was Sapele but now I’m not 100% sure. Thoughts?

Could be, figure and color is about right, the sapwood also looks to be appropriate color.
Does it have a slight cedar-like scent while being worked/sanded?

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

That looks a lot more like khaya than sapele to me.

Yeah, probably sapele. Measure the density, it's a little heavier than most mahogany-looking woods.
