A few years ago I got a nice set of figured "maple". To me it looked very different than the European maple I know.
Instead of very slightly creamy white, this has a greyish / reddish tint when fresh. Oxidized or French polished it turns a normal golden.
The set was flatsawn showing intense shell figure. From the side excess I made a few nice sets of qs bindings, medullary ray specks are very strong.
The winter lines are very very faint, very hard to see on the flatsawn surface, which is different than Euro maple.
Also, the flatsawn surface shows lots of strange brown "worms". One Euro wood that seems to be somewhat similar, in having dark streaks, and a reddish hue, is Birch.

Anyone seen something similar on the other side of the pond before? Thanks!

YT showing it finished: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akUqZt4Ocg4

Red maple often has a grayish tint. It also tends to have more of the 'worm tracks' than other domestic maples.
