Was struggling to think of how to hold UPVC trim in place at the top of a window while the glue firmed up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Hi Colin,
Another trick for putting up trim without nailing is to use 100% silicone caulk and hot melt glue. First apply daps of silicone, then dabs of hot melt glue and quickly stick it in place. Hot melt provides a temporary hold and the silicone glues it permanently.
But go bars work too, and it is always good to have more than one way to pluck a catgut!

When I first joined the OLF around 2006ish there was a post about archeologists believing that ancient humans used sticks in caves as go-bars to clamp stuff back then too. When you have lemons as they say... :)

I opened this thread fully expecting to read about the merits of 192g vs 315g HHG for second fix/finish carpentry and a light flame war about the perils of using fish glue for mouldings around a south-facing window.

Great use of go-bars. But I’m slightly disappointed :D

Sorry about that, I understand your disappointment.
But I'm delighted - it's worked fine.

Sorry for my tendancy to forget stuff.
Are you the same Colin who got his fingers badly damaged in an accident with a bicycle. I'd be interested to hear if your all mended

That was Colin Symonds. He lost some fingers in a motorcycle accident.

I was curious to see if he regained use of his fingers. If he can improve afterwards. I figured that if he saw improvement after hi accident, maybe I could improve after my strokes.

Speaking of Colin Symonds, has anyone heard from him lately? I'd like to get in touch with him. I'm making a guitar with some Caucasian Spruce he sent back in 2008 or so. It'd be nice to hear how he's doing.

I think Colin has given up making instruments as I heard he'd given all his wood to Dave White (remember him?). He's still active on the British 'Acoustic Soundboard' forum, as is Dave White.
