Brad, is that curly Walnut? Whatever it is, it is very nice.

You have cooler tools than I've ever even heard of. Even that square clamping thingy.

That’s right, curly walnut.

I got that set from Appalachian Tonewood in West by God Virginia on a field trip with Don Parker. :)

As always, some astounding work being done in your shops.
I just strung up this one.
In the 60's Fender made a "Fender Bass VI"
It is basically a 6-string electric strung with a 30" scale, thicker strings and tuned down an octave.
It was used by the Beatles John/George on their early recordings when Paul would man the piano.
Also used in Glenn Campbell's "Wichita Lineman"
There has been a resurgence of late, with amazing players like Mark Letteri of The Fearless Flyers using modern interpretations of the Bass VI.
Here is my version, with an Ash body, African Mahogany neck and Bubinga fretboard, pickguard and headplate, dual concentric vol/tone, and a slide pickup selector switch:

Nice appearance and sanitary design. In Nashville they used these to play "tic-tac bass" on a number of hits, using Fender 6 string basses or Danelectro 6 string basses. What does this one sound like?

Hi folks, long time ;)

I used to be quite active around here for a while, until the dust allergies made working with wood increasingly difficult for me, and I had to slow down on the instrument building. Over the last few months I have rebuilt my workshop completely, with two rooms separated by an "airlock", to keep the clean and dusty work apart. I also got a new wooden floor, a couple of new windows, a new dust collection system, some machine upgrades etc. And now finally, I also have some new instruments on the way.

Good to see you back Arnt. Your new shop looks great! I’m jealous, I only have one small window.

This one is finished.
The EMG-81 sounds wonderfully clean through my tube amp.
The shell sparkles nicely but is not camera friendly.

I’m eager to get back on an SG project. It will be a carved top with a hint of purple.
I know it will be my best yet, and can finally move on to a new hobby.

Good looking shop.

Correct, I'm in Trondheim, Leksvik is not far from here. I assume your last name is Skarsaune, it sounds very Norwegian ;-)

We'll see how it goes, but if I am exposed to wood dust from some of the usual suspects (ziricote, madrose, cocobolo etc), I get serious swelling around the eyes, constant tears, itching etc. for days or weeks, so NOT a pretty sight. The scary part of course is it will only get worse with more exposure.

The idea with this new workshop layout is that I continue to wear my "TREND AIR/PRO Airshield and Faceshield Dust Protector" while working in the machine room, which is also where I do all sanding operations. It's a helmet with a battery powered fan and filters, so quite heavy and cumbersome, but it keeps the dust out of my system enough that I can manage. My new dust collection system is pretty good at catching dust at the source, but part of the plan is to avoid the problem woods as much as possible.

The assembly room is for hand tools only, which means I can work without a mask. Or so I hope...

Hi Arnt,
Great to see you back! I always enjoyed seeing the things you made. There are plenty of great woods that aren't allergens.
Another possibility is to work with laminating commercial veneers. Since you glue up the layers to bring it up to thickness there is almost no milling and minimal sanding. You do need to be careful with "epoxy skin contact" if you use that to do the laminating but with appropriate PPE (gloves and maybe an organic vapor filter mask if particularly sensitive) it might allow you to use woods that would otherwise be problematic.
Very nice looking shop! Separating the milling/machine area from the assembly area is a good idea.

Hi Clay, thanks, it's good to be building again.

Good call about the veneer, as you may recall I actually did build one guitar from some I got from you, many years ago. It turned out well, and pretty too! Unfortunately it's not easy to come by high quality veneer over here, besides I have all this fancy wood on the shelf... Hopefully I can still use most of it if I am careful.

Nice one Arnt, good to see you back.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

It is Norwegian - my father came to the US when he was 14.
I still have aunts and uncles and cousins there - we were last in Trondheim for my cousin's wedding in 2018.

Great to have you back Arnt! Your posts were always informative.

Nothing too exciting. Two OM’s for clients in the works and I delivered a sunburst to another guy. (Tony F finish)
