These have been on the bench for a while. They are basically 20” scale guitars tuned to A. One is an x-brace SS, the other a fan-braced nylon. They are both cedar over sapele. Both are really hard to put down!

Very cool, Michael. I've been thinking about building something like those. So many guitars, so little time!

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

The bodies are finished using satin Profin. I’ve been using profin on furniture, trim, and kitchen countertops for the last 40 years. It’s very durable, easy to apply, and thin. I can’t imagine the finish on the guitars being more than a mil or two. This is 5 coats. Wipe on, let sit for 10 minutes, burnish off. Second pass, wipe on a fairly liberal coat, wet sand with P1500, burnish off. Apply 3 more coats following step one. You can apply a coat every 8hrs, but I typically wait over night. WARNING! Make sure all rags are outside, spread flat or in a bucket of water. They can spontaneously combust! Ask me how I know…

Nice looking instruments! I'm sure they are a lot of fun to play.
Somewhere I have an old Washburn and a Bay States terz guitar I used to play. Terz guitars do seem to be having a little bit of a revival and might be a nice niche market for builders.

Those are so nice. I may steal your idea about the Santa Cruz strings and string up one of my V braced baritone ukes to see how it sounds. They are the same scale length and I don’t have a real concern about them being able to handle steel strings.

I was considering putting the silk and steel on there but I don’t like the way those sound.

I never heard of that finish before but it sure looks nice. Kind of has that oil varnish glow to it.

Yeah, Dalys is a local Washington state company. The oil-varnish look is what I like about it as well, It’s also pretty bomber!
