But what happens when a wave makes contact with a surface regardless of it's wave length? And what would be the result of that if the surface was glass smooth or corrugated cardboard given the same hardness, stiffness and so on.

Sorry to hear that.

I have certainly had my share of pain from all the work I have done in the last 50 plus years.
If it wasn't for the fact that I had a "day" job for the last 20 years (which I retired from 2 years ago) I probably would be in much worse shape.
I just had surgery on the tendon in my left middle finger and at least 5 cortisone shots in other fingers.....

My saying is: I am not broken, just bent.......

How finely you can measure depends on the size of the probe. A microscope’s resolution is limited by the wavelength of the light used for viewing. Using sound as a probe, you won’t get a reflection off of anything much smaller than a large fraction if a quarter wavelength. Imagine trying to block the sound from a guitar by holding a book or any other object small enough to hold between you and the guitar. Remember the ripple tank demonstrations in high school? A small object didn’t block any of the ripples. The quarter wavelength for the highest C on the guitar (1046.5 Hz) is way bigger than even 80 grit sanding scratches. Anyway, that’s how I understand it.

I liberally rub the inside of the body with Doc McKay’s Patented ToneGrease. Yes, only Doc McKay’s ToneGrease is trusted by Europe’s finest luthiers to greatly enhance articulation, sustain and separation. Now available for the first time in the USA, for the recipe just send a check or money order for $29.99 to the following address …
