I just jinished sanding a rosette flush and was surprised at what it revealed...a small stain on the top!....i tryed to just sand the stain to see if it was in fact residue fron the rosette or purfling but its not! Looking at it from the soundhole looks like the stai goes into the wood anout 2mm... Any idea how to remedy this? Its in a place where people normally look at and the fingerboard does not come close enough!

Is there a stain like this anywhere else on the top?

My guess if there is not, is bleed from the purfling, nearby.

Time for some creative inlay if you want to save the top, or replacement otherwise.

Nice work. Question: Did you seal the channel with shellac?

Russel, no i have not tryed naphta...

Bruce, i did seal the top. Do you think naphta may help?
I would hate to have to replace it after all the time spent

I may be in the minority here, but that doesn't look like something that should worry you... I imagine it will be barely noticeable under finish. I'd just keep going. Its wood, you can't predict it, and it will manipulate you as much as you think you can manipulate it.

A creative inlay always looks odd to me. Why ruin the form of the guitar with its familiar and attractive curves by killing the flow of the aesthetics just to cover up a minute dark spot? In my opinion thats never a solution.

I agree with Joshua. It's not something someone else will ever dwell on. You? Sure, but no one else. If you're really concerned just use a lightly tinted finish on the top. Something like an amber shellac would cover it quite nicely I'll bet.

Peter, did you use CA for that awesome rosette? if so, it could have just squeezed out from pressing the rosette in then fine sanding should just do it?

Anyway you fix this, let us know how it goes, i'm with you on this bud!

Peter I go along with Josh on this one. Another option would be to extend the FB to the soundhole edge or even beyond. I sure wouldn't replace the top for that.

What Bob and Josh said Peter, looks like your fretboard could very well hide it, keep it!

In a way it looks like that blue mold stain that sometimes is appearant in spruce tops, in which case I dont think it would affect a buyer decision,whether to buy it or not - But your prolly right about it being bleed out from the purfling.
I go for sound first when buying an instrument, a little tiny stain like that wouldnt bother me if I fell in love w/ the instrument.

Thanks guys! I think I'm beeing a little over critical on this one!! Maybe I'll just leave it alone! Unfortunately the stain is to the side of the fingerboard and its impossible to cover up!

You are right Peter. We ar all our own harshes critics. We know every flaw and miscue made during the building process and they just jump out at us.

Try the naptha. If it works fine. If not, In the words of John and Paul, "let it be".
