Last week or so I wanted to pull out a neck blank from a shelf in my wood storage.
While I had it in my hands and took a closer look at it, I noticed the room around me starting to move.
Well, the (slightly) overloaded shelfs started to bend and came a bit closer to my face, somehow.

So I had to do something and stated sorting, grading and organizing my wood room.
I thought ok, let’s invest a day or two, actually it took me like one week. Luckily it is very hot here in Bavaria these days, so I did not get cold moving all this stuff around…..

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

65 Princeton Reverb is now singing pretty!

Was thrilled to gather my fire extinguisher, put on my rubber shoes, get out the rubber mat and fire up the 1965 Princeton that I built from the Stewart MacDonald kit. Lucky me my triple checking my work all along the way paid off she fired up beautifully the first time with no issues.

The amp sounds great and has a very low, nearly not audible hum which is as good as it gets with these and it sounds great. So much so I have already swapped out the OEM speaker for an upgrade that I purchased last year.

Drilling down and going though all the functionality after all the voltages checked out as in acceptable range the vibrato is not functioning but the reverb is. With more checking I can't find what's wrong with the vibrato and I asked StewMac for some tech support (included with the kits). With in an hour of my email I had a reply from Tommy who is a fantastic tech support resource and he's already on it asking me to check this and that and send him some pics.

So I very nearly got though this with no mistakes or at least fatal mistakes that kept the amp from functioning. It sounds great too and will be nice to add that legendary blackface Fender clean tones and reverb to the choices here.

This was my 4th amp that I have built in two years now and I am debating doing another one. It's a LOT of fun and I learned a great deal including how to be safe around filter caps and how to discharge them and not into my body....

As mentioned I'm thrilled and looking forward to playing Stormy Monday on this baby!

I decided to take a smaller step with changes to the 00. This is version 1.5. I kept the same shape for now, which lets me use the existing mold and forms, and just changed the bracing. Widened the X to 97 deg and shifted toward the sound hole. I have two in the hopper that will use this bracing pattern. One will be a khaya and red spruce with a burst! Wish me luck.

I cut them on the CNC. The engraving is done with a diamond drag bit (spindle is not turned on during the engraving), and the rest is cut with an O flute bit from Amana.

If you have your plan in a digital format I’m happy to cut one for you.

Brad, I like those plastic knobs on your spreaders. I'm currently just using wing nuts but this is a better option. I'm struggling to come up with a search for them. What are they called exactly.

Found them, star knobs. I'll get them before I close the box. Thanks for posting.

Finished the rehab on the old Gerstner tool chest. I wanted to keep some of its character, not making it look new. Lots of elbow grease and tricky finish stripping since I wanted to strip the lacquer that had been sprayed over the grime, but wanting to keep the original shellac underneath. Now my small hand tools have a nice place to live. Goof Off and 0000 steel wool worked great.

Beautiful work on the chest. Love to see these - Gerstner or Gerstner-style chests were never much of a “thing” in Australia and are hard to obtain in any condition.



Spent the morning with this thing and my soldering iron - it’s equipped with some kind of piezo system split into treble/bass outputs plus a midi out (!) and a rechargeable 12v battery to run the works and also its fancy LED light strip.

Hello guys. It has literally been years since I've been able to visit the OLF except in visitor mode, my provider has forbidden me to log in for some unknown reason. Then yesterday I happened to click in and boom, I was allowed to log on.
