Re the "shop vacs".
I've had good experience with my De Vielle 25L Ash Vacuum Cleaner . 1200 watt, 3 filters, HEPA Filter, Metal Filter and Fabric Filter and overheat protection, never missed a beat since I started using it, sucks very well.
Had it 5 years.just bought new filters for it.
$95.

I’ve got a Festool Midi that I’ve had for 6 or 7 years. It was expensive and filters are expensive. It works very well and if it breaks I’ll go get another one!

Have a Festool CT-22 "dust extractor" and have had it for 18 years now. Still works like and even looks like new. One of the best products I ever bought. This is in my home shop.

In our commercial shop I've gone through three Shop-vacs in the same period of time and their filtration is not as good the Festool is HEPA.

By the way even though it's minimal for the application with a Performax 10 - 20 the Festool's 132 CFM worked pretty well and I could get by with it doing thickness sanding with a small machine.

Colin - it’s weird how some builds go very well and others fight you every step of the way…

I have a dust rite separator from Rocker. It works good. Today I made an adaptor to have it work with the Festool. I found a small hunk of an Englemann wedge, and turned it on my mini-lathe. Luckily, it seems to have 30:1 tapers everywhere. My lathe compound is set at that angle to do violin and guitar pegs.

Englemann is stringy, with very long fibers.

The tap tone is horrible.

Now I have a big mess to clean up.

I glued together some of the re-saws I had done a couple weeks ago, and today I hand them sanded, along with the sides. I also had a piece of Padauk re-sawn and sanded for sides for the pad auk archtop I started.
$20 minimum for re-sawing, and $60 for a half hour of sanding. He did say that I could bring in a backer board to make them thinner. I've never sanded before, even down to 1/8" it seems like a luxury. It is nice to get them flat so easy.

a 4 piece Sapele for the larger Torres pattern; still pretty small
a Padauk, and a Walnut Panormo,
a top for the Vihuela.
a Padauk Voboam baroque
ribs for the mahogany Dred, and the archtop ribs.

The 3 tops in the middle are quarter Doug fir, as heavy as cherry or maple. We'll see.

Now when things are cleaned up, and put away, I can start fixing the little Electroless Paul.

I have stuff for 6 with necks, and everything but tuners. 4 use wooden pegs.

Hey Colin, What kind of shape is that guitar? I might have asked before. It is different.

Spending the weekend in Nashville with my wife and son. What a treat to play Bashkin, Bourgeois, SCGC, many Collings, Martins, and more. Great learning experience, confidence booster and intimidator all at the same time. :)

Lower bout is based on the J45 shape, modified to fit into a 000-12 upper bout via a Kinkade OM waist, using my own headstock shape.
That way they can all sue me.... oops_sign

What’s happening in my shop? Accumulation of cobwebs while I recover from last Wednesday’s replacement of my right knee. I guess you could say I have a new tool, but it will be a few weeks before I can fully use it. :D Oh, well; more time to read up on what everyone else is doing, and be impressed.

Box is closed.
I used spool clamps on 3 previous builds. First time to use the squeezies.
I do not have a way to keep it in the mold when clamping with spool clamps so I have been accumulating these orange Jorg clamps. Much prefer these to spool or cam clamps.

Thanks, Karl. On the Jorgensen clamps: I have lots of the 4” size (the smallest), and I find them to be super useful for all sorts of low pressure clamping tasks.

Steve,
That walnut is nice!
What is a nylon stringed hybrid?
Something like a lightly braced steel string body with nylon strings. What makes it not a classical? X bracing?

Thanks Ken. Hybrid, at least in my mind, just means it's a classical body with more of a steel string neck, it has a 16-20 inch radius and is only 1 7/8" at the nut. Easier for steel string players to work with - at least this one, hopefully ;)

It's interesting to note that 1 7/8, close to 48mm, was a common classical neck width back in the day.

Funny, I had no clue. I usually play 1 3/4" so I figured I could push it out to 1 7/8" without much trouble. I don't like the wider neck, if I do another one it will be 1 3/4" idunno

Some tuner issues on this one. Turns out that those crimps you see in the top and bottom plates are important to the functionality. This one from the 1840's and in beautiful shape.
