Cool looking ukes, bet they were fun to build. Thanks guys, I'll try to post a pic of the way I did the "pilage". I glued and thicknessed the top first, bent the fold in it. I had to use a good deal of heat and figured that the glue was probably compromised, so I cut it down the seam and reglued after the bending.

Wow beautiful Ukes Pat!

Mike that is a great idea to get the pliage done right. I was using Michael Collins book and he bends the pliage into each half first then joints them and glues them up. I could not possibly see myself doing that. But to intentionally glue the two tops together to bend them then re-cut and join again is brilliant.

Lovely, and I love a parlor guitar!

Question - are you making your own workboards on the CNC? If so, would you mind sharing the material you like to use? I’m wanting to find an MDF type material that’s thicker than .75” without having to laminate two pieces. :)

Hi Brad,
They make MDF up to 2 inches in thickness. 1 1/8 inch thickness is usually not too hard to find from cabinet supply places as it is often used for commercial countertops. Your local cabinet shop could order it in from their wholesaler for a small markup.

No, I had Josh make mine. They are excellent quality! 2 work boards plus 2 radius dishes are under $300US. I sourced the sandpaper elsewhere cuz the 60# Josh offered was a bit aggro for my needs - I use 80#. https://www.canadianluthiersupply.com/c ... ork-boards

I made my first dishes out of 1” MDF as I had a bunch of off-cuts from building loudspeakers. I found that once you cut the dish profile the material immediately distorted due to released tension in the material - plus a sheet of 1” MDF is f-in heavy, about #140 as I recall. My older frame isn’t much into that anymore.

My buddy Joe Mendel uses that Lee Valley Cabinet makers glue and loves it.
Guess I should try it, since no more LMI glue.

I've been using titebond's “translucent” glue and I really like it. It seems a lot like LMI's old formula instrument makers glue…

What I like about the Cabinetmaker's glue is that the parts don't scoot around as much when being clamped.

Wow, it seems it is a new thing. It no longer even comes up on the "USA" site. I added it to my cart from the Canadian .ca domain, it added ok, but when I went to check out it I got the "not available in your location" message. asking self -----> now what

EDIT: They don't ship it after November 1st. Should be available in the spring

Lee Valley glue separates when frozen so I expect they don’t like mailing it in the winter…

Also from press testing I’ve found the LV cabinet glue does not dry as hard as some other glues…
