I was so happy to get to this point! Got the thickness to about .790" and thought "... let's get it to .770" and call it good." Well, as you can see, I struck Aluminum

Second neck,third fretboard and I thought I had it. Well, it gets easier each time.

I guess it would be better to go absolutely through and know there was too deep a slot for the truss, etc
than get it within .001 or just enough not to know, and have it crack through when you or one of your customers adjusted the trussrod some time!
It must pain you though

In general, how much "meat" do you guys typically try to keep between the truss rod and the back side of the neck? Is there a rule of thumbe of sorts?

1/8" of an inch between the inside and outside world

0.77" is with the fret board yes?

That sure seems thin to me. I use a 7/32" thick fretboard and make the final thickness of the neck with freatboard 0.82-0.84 at the nut, that's nice and comfortable.

Now, I use a single action single rod which is burried 1/2" in the center of the neck and tapers up about 1/16" from the 7th fret to the nut so here are the numbers I work with.

Total FB & NECK=0.82"
-----------------------
FB=0.219"
Neck=0.60"

0.60"-0.44"-0.16" of "meat" remaining.

I guess you could go as low as 0.77" and still have 0.11" of meat remaining. All depends how deep the channel for the truss rod is.

Oh, by the way, I did the same thing on my first. I tryed to backstrap it, but it look awfull, so I built a new neck.Rod True38826.9400347222

Thanks for posting your neck specs. I guess I was seduced by the thin neck!

I was using a Martin style truss rod from LMI and a pre-radiused and slotted fret board about .250" thick.

Man, I should have taken into consideration the depths and thicknesses.

Oh,well, another excuse not to have to watch American Idol!!!!

By the way, I saved my fretboard. It had tons on inlay, initials, abalone....the
whole works.
Just place your heating blanket if you have one on it and slowly and carefully
slide a putty knife between the fretboard and the neck. It takes some time,
but if you have done a lot of work on the fretboard, it is worth it!!!

Pete, the real newb here is me, my 2000 and some posts are just for undercover purposes, for instance, spying on the master works of arts from Master Andy here, but don't tell him i know he's a master, he'll just deny it ok ?
