Here's proof that they did not always get the sunburst right in the good old days either. This is Bobby Osborne's 1924 Loar F5.   To quote Darryl G. Wolfe (The F5 Journal) who posted the picture on Mandolin Cafe:"I think this was the last day of employment for the worker that applied the finish to this one. No offense Bobby."

I actually think it is pretty cool in a funky, old timey way, quite different from the Collins sunburst that Russel loves so much
