I have recently been using the Active topics section to view the topics on the forum and I was amazed at the difference between the Posts to a topic versus the number of times the topic was viewed.

Now I know that many times people will post within the first few posts of a topic and then come back to watch the progress, but I am wondering (probably to never realy find out) how many people just lurk (this is not a bad thing at all) and only post a few times.

I know that Serge has made up about 5% of the posts since he joined, but there is still 95% out there.

Taking a quick look at the active topics, there seems to be, on average a 10-20% posts to viewing ratio.

Just something interesting to share.

What? Guitar stuff? What's that? I haven't been in the shop for about 2 weeks.

See how funny is that. 5 mins, 3 viewings, no other posts.

What is really amazing is the the daily number of guests. I suspect that we have several regulars that never register but return daily or near daily.

With in the last month we had over 4 million page views at the OLF. There are lots of lurkers.

That said, over 50% of our members login in more than once per day, In a given month we generate approximately 75,000 user log-in sessions.

I think what this says, is that we all like each other

I just got conformation for a new commission form someone that was a guest lurker many times on our forum. I spent the last couple weeks working out the specs with him. This is my first non-referral or personally unknown client from out of state. I have had commissions from people out of state that I did not know prior to the order but they all had been referred to me by past clients or personal acquaints. This client picked me via this site and my bio. Dang this place is worth more than I tought "Sa-la-vi" say the old folks, "goes to show you never can tell"

I know I'm one of the lurkers in those threads, because I don't know
anything yet! Once I have a little more experience behind me, maybe I'll
be a little more vocal.

Aww, come on Evan, don't be shy, we don't bite.

Yes it was a joke Hesh, but I betcha it's not to far off.    Serge and Bruce Dickey post a lot, Serge is at what 2500+/- in 131 days and Bruce's new ID is around 950 since Feb 1 (94 days).

These guys know how to chat. I love it. Rod True38842.7606944444

I, for one, spend a lot of time here not logged in, because my browser (Firefox on a Mac) doesn't seem to be able to remember to keep me logged in. So, I have to log in every time I come back to the good ol' OLF if I want to post. Plus, I'm too lazy to change back to a browser that plays nice with the OLF software. Some folks may not know that your preferences can be set to keep you logged in, which I think might boost the number of logins.

I too spent a long time lurking here before I subscribed, not having anything to offer (my fantastic wit aside ).

As to what Hesh said about allowed topics and what we see here in a day of posts, it's the social aspect of this place that makes it special, like when we share not just technical or aesthetic stuff, but things that concern us personally, like family matters, concerns over misfortunes or losses of others, personal victories, and so on. I'm going to get sappy here in a sec, better quit.

My post/lurk ratio is at least .01, maybe .005.

I like to follow the threads, I just don't see the need to post to each thread.    To me, once you have posted you are no longer a lurker..........

............just a confirmed addict.

I've been a lurker for quite a while. I'm a newbie in the midst of my first kit build. I am quite honestly touched by the sense of community that I have felt by reading the posts and gaining an understanding of way this forum works for its members -- lots more going on than just technical issues.

I too will become more vocal when/where I feel that I can contribute in a positive manner.

Thanks for being here!

I bet I lurked for almost a year, some of it every once in a while, but the last three months i bet I checked out olf once a day. My system at work leaves me logged on unless I have to reboot so I don't know if you can tell how many times I check out olf, but If I tell you you have to promise not to send me to get professional help . I don't post too often since I am far from an expert on guitar building, but once in a while I will if I believe I can help out, or get a laugh.. So I guess I'm a posterlurker with wannabe tendencys. They don't have a pill for that yet.

I czech the OLF every day, just to find out what's new! Believe it or not it's a high point. Everybody's pretty cool and they build something I really like, guitars!

Don't have to post!
I just wanted to point out that in 24 hours time we saw pictures of our pals Serge, Alain, and Shane, discovered how to find cheap gas, learned why Robbie loves teaching, and discovered that 4,000,000 pages of our literary prowess is viewed by others.......
Not in the last 24, but let's not forget Ron's armadillo! Now THAT was fun!
