everyone posts pics of their work...newbies to old pros. Does anyone ever make mistakes? Does everyone but me build perfect guitars? Well, I work best when angry so please keep posting pics!!!   

But seriously, everyday I am amazed on this forum and everyday I get 1,000 new ideas. The necks, the bodies, the jigs, you all do wonderful work and really inspire a newbie like myself.

Tony is right, you just don't know where to look. And that would be in the landfill in my case!

Yes, this should make you feel better, my 1st guitar I went through no less than 7 soundboards. No lie. Number 7 was the charm though, and looked wonderful. I was so proud, until I went to attach the neck and realized I cut the soundhole way to far in the center of the guitar. Tried to remove the top, and ruined the guitar. Similar story with the next guitar, only different mistakes. But, I did not give up, and I am still building and hope to even the score soon.

Thanks guys, it will help us see that you guys went through the same problems and as Ron Wisdom said, speed kills, the first one being the most thrilling, having to overcome the haste to learn too quick. Come to think of it, we newbies should remind ourselves that we're not just making the latest model kit car, we are building something that most people would not even dream of in their entire lives.

Miters I love purfling miters, I love binding miters ( Frank if you cant tell I going through a desensitizing program at present. ignore my babbling) Miters, I love, purfling miters.

Yeah purfling mitres ..... I was looking at the Laskin inlay book yesterday and noticed ...OOOHHH MMYYYYYY .. that I could actually see a dark hairline between the mitre of a b/w/b on a headstock - but only one, the rest were PERFECT !! Wonder what the discount was for THAT . Guess the chisel needed a sharpening that day or something.

For those who have the book, try to find it, and you get the FLAMING TUB O LARD !!!!

Michael, speaking of purfling miters...How's that rosette comming along?

Mattia, I couldn't agree with you more...It has to be trick photography. Notice how we only get extreme closeups of select parts.

Joe I have not got the deposit in hand yet so I have not started. I an working on a simple teflon fixture to build the rosette up in. I should have the deposit in hand this Friday and will start work shorly there after.

I see everyone's head nodding up and down, but I don't see any pictures.

And the "pis de resistance", the end graft. And yes, that is wood
putty, just haven't sanded it yet.


I've spared you the *just* slightly off-center-line neck, the poor routing
around the rosette, and the back binding, which is truly atrocious (more
wood putty). And, the pictures above don't do justice!

So Frank, you're not alone!!!

Apologies to dial-uppers...

I wasn't happy with the bracing job I did on this back, didn't figure it out till it was already attached, so off came the back...



Here's not one but two tops where I misplaced the soundhole by about an inch.


An unexpected dent in my bending slat resulted in this...


Took me several tries until I got the lining installed to where I was happy with them, I had problems with gaps at the waist.


Those are some of my major blunders so far. On the plus side, I've learned a ton about un-doing and re-doing and fixing, much more than if everything had gone right the first time. I've learned that if a mistake bothers me right after I make it, it's going to bother me ten times as much later on when it's too late to undo it, so I've just resigned myself to taking forever and trying to get it right to the best of my current abilities.

Weird. Yeah, that's just a shaft of light from the window. Maybe Allied needs to add "Pre-finished!" to their ad for opportunity grade rosewood. :)

As Alain said, well said but i'm not even good at photography! Pretty hard for me to try and hide the obvious that's everywhere!

Thanks Jon, it seems that we all encounter the same problem, i really like your philosophy towards undoing and redoing, gotta do whutcha gotta do to make it right!

Hey, there's nothing a little camera shake won't hide ;-)

I'm not trying to pretend I'm anywhere near the same league a lot of the guys here are in, but I came out pretty happy about my first. Electric building helps with some aspects, at least...
