   Here are a few pics of a 12 fret Dred I finished. The top is Sitka I got from Alaska Speciality Woods years ago, the back and sides are EIR. The headstock veneers and bridge are Maria Preta and the binding is Hickory. The finish is Rock Hard varnish which turned the Sitka a great color.
   With Meds. and a flat pick it has the good bass you would expect from a 12 fret but it also stays strong even on the high treble. I tried putting lights on it and was suprised at how well it works as a fingertyle guitar. I'm thinking of building one a little shallower with a redwood or cedar top - I think it might make a nice fingerstyle instrument.

I was having the fingerstyle/flatpick debate with a player friend lastnight and he pointed out that both types of player are looking for the same thing - good/clear note separation and balance with appropriate volume, sustain and projection. Maybe the subtleties lie in the amounts of these and the overtone content.

That's a very nice looking dred. Did you spray or brush that varnish?

Paul...Great looking guitar. How does the shape differ from a 14 fret dred? It kinda looks "slope-shouldered" as described by Martin.

Did you have plans for this? (If so, where can one buy them) ...or did you wing it?

Also, what scale length?

Ron and Lance - The varnish was brushed, eight coats over zpoxy finishing resin on the b&s and shellac on the top. With some tips I got from Al Carruth here I am getting pretty consistant results on the top and back but I still have a lot of trouble with witness lines on the sides - I often have to do them over and over and.......

JJ - I just winged the shape, but it fits in a Martin case (not perfectly but close). The body is 21" long and is definitly slope-shouldered compared to a normal Dred. The upper bout extends tword the headstock end about half the distance of the difference between the 12th and 14th frets and the other half is made up by moving the bridge tword the tail.

Wow. Very nice guitar, Paul. I'm starting to really like the thinner rosettes. The bridge shape works really well with the body shape, and the hickory looks especially nice with the top color. You should be proud!
