Tim and I have been conversing on his offer for a pallet load of Tas Blackwood to the OLF. The total volume is 208.16 bd ft in various size cants. Tim has sent the list of all of the cants by grade. Most are good sizes to recover typical sized backs and sides but a couple are a little cumbersome. So, the way I figured it out it will take about 2 bd ft per back and side set in the typical dimensions that Tim has supplied to me, that includes waste from my saw's kerf. I am thinking that the sets will range from $120 to $160 each depending on the grade you want. These prices include all costs, including import processing fees and delivery to my shop. Shipping from here to your address will be extra. Tim has posted lots of pictures of this wood on his thread so I think you have an idea of what to expect as far the wood's appearance. Once the go ahead has been granted the wood will take 6 to 8 weeks to get to Vancouver and another week to clear customs and get delivered to me. I will then leave it settle in for about 4 to 6 weeks and then saw and sticker for another 4 weeks before I would ship it out. All of this to minimize risk of loosing sets to continued drying under uncontrolled conditions (the sorting room of a local post office!). Tim will cover the frieght costs to Vancouver in his prices of $35 to $50/ bd ft depending on grade. So that saves a few bucks. Once I have an idea of who wants what then we can get the order going.

Here is what I propose. The grades that Tim has staded are:

1) Birdseye/Fiddleback (these will be $120/$130 range probably)

2) Fiddleback (these will be about $140/$160 range)

3) Buttress Fiddleback (These sets are odd sizes 40 x 13 and 36 x 14, so some careful concideration and cutting will be required to get the best recovery from these cants, they will likely be in $160 range)

These prices are estimates, I doubt they will go up but may be a bit less, or they might include shipping to you, but I would rather estimate a bit high than get it all here and suprise everyone with increased costs. So the best of these sets I would normally retail in the $230 range, so these would still be a bargain.

So let me know what grade you want, how much you want and let me add it up and we will go from there. DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY!!!! Until we have confirmed that the order will be placed, at that time I will take your money and forward a full payment to Tim, if we have enough interest. I will also endevour to get some others outside of the forum interested if we need a few more to make this deal happen but I will wait to do this until all of you have exercised your right of first refusal as an OLF member.

I will pony up for two sets of the fiddleback, plus some headstock plate sized pieces (possible 4x8x 3/8 thick so I can bookmatch top and back) and a couple 1x1x32 inch fiddleback binding pieces if possible - a couple shorter 1x1's , like 20 inch, would be good for FBs as well.

I'm in for two buttress sets, and I don't need bigger than OM and would take down to a 0-size parlor size, and headplates if you'll have those. Maybe size 5 if there's a decent price break depending on what's available when it's all sliced up.

I have spoken to Tim about buying bd ft even before this Taz topic came up.
He was really cool and open and receptive to working something out w/me, since Shane decided to take the importing and cutting on, I changed my mind and decided that would be better for me at least - if you really want to go that route {of buying billets} you can always contact Tim directly Don, Im not being a jerk, believe me.............. just making a suggestion seeing as the sets at a discount doesnt seem to please you.

I think that what Shane is proposing here Charlie is a really good idea for people like yourself who may not want to bother or may not even have access to resaw facilities. For those members, it is very good of him to step in and help out and shows once again why Shane is such a respected and valued member and sponsor of our group.

Having said that, I think what Don is concerned about is the fact that Tim's original offer was for OLF members to have access to a once only shipment of green flitches at a substantial discount. Buying this way would allow those buyers to convert their boards when ever and however they choose.

Lets face it, 10 stickered sets take a good deal more management and care in storage than a couple of thick boards do. My thoughts are that the option of buying flitches by the B/F should not be over looked for the sake of those members who just want sets.

Delivery into Canada and to my house will add another $6/ bd ft. If you purchase an entire cant I will forward that directly to you at no cost except the shipping from my place to yours. If you want your cant processed by me I will do that for $60/hr CDN (the rate for 2 guys plus the saws). I will purchase a carbide band for the saw just for this purpose. If you are not interested in a full cant's worth of wood and would rather have just a set or two then I would have to purchase the cant and process a set out for you, I am willing to do that also but would need to see how much interest there is before I did that.

It is our hope that this information should give you enough detail with which you can make an informed decision about your purchase, knowing all of the costs, with no hidden mark-ups. This is the spirit in which the wood is offered. For shipping costs to your address you can search on Canada Post's website using my Postal Code in Terrace BC, V8G 4R6, as the starting reference point. This wood weighs about 850 kg/m3 (about 53lbs/ft3). Add about 2 pounds for packaging and about 0.75 inches all of the way around for a very accurate delivery rate to you door.

So the process will be based on a first come first served basis. Pick your cant by Grade and # and claim it. If there are some individual sets wanted then I will pick some cant's for that purpose and claim them as well, through the same process as everyone else.

Sure Larry,

No import duties but 7% Government Tax and it will cost about $600 Canadian to clear out of the Port in Vancouver and then to Truck it to where I live, 1,000 road miles north to Terrace.

The actual costs will be only what they are but I want display what I expect them to be so there are no surprises.
