Lance asked me to post some photos of the Auction Winning John Mayes
photo shoot. Well John just sent me some samples. I sent him my little
travel parlor guitar.   He took some off center so I could ad text next for
advertising etc. The selection is only just a few. AMAZING work...the
photos...not the guitar.

I'm afraid I must disagree with part of your statement, Andy. It actually is an amazing guitar. I'm working on a Terz and hope it's only half as nice when it's done.

Great work, John. Lighting is especially nice. It shows when a photographer knows his/her subject, especially you being a builder. Did you use a polarizer on any of them?

Thanks guys.

And no I did not use my polarizer. I normally do but when I took a few
shots on this guitar with it the woods color and contrast really died, and
looked lifeless. So I just adjusted my lights the best I could to avoid any
large reflections on the back and such.

Nope I have a Olympus E-500 with a couple different lenses (and a MAcro
Lens in my sights soon), a few filters, some seamless paper, and some
softbox lights..

The lights are the major part I'm sure...
The camera plays a big role but you gotta be able to get the lights and reflection just right!!

John, what kind of softbox lights do you use?

It's all good!! Amazing workmanship on the guitar. The photo work is incredible.

John, you have a nice eye for composition. Just a couple of thoughts - I don't know what kind of polarizer filter you have, but you need to make sure it is a good one that really is "neutral" in color balance (most aren't). The only one that I can recommend is a B&W, they are really expensive, but worth it. When we used to photograph large items with a lot of reflective surfaces, we used a film in front of the lights that was suppossed to be polarizing - I don't remember who makes this, or what it was called, but it was very effective for reducing reflections (We used try not to use filters in front of our lenses in the old days). If you are interested, I'll find out for you what that film was.

yeah I'd love to know. I have a Hoya HMC polarizing filter. Cost me about
$70...I'll look into the B&W and yeah find out what the film was... every bit
helps!
