Working on a Pau Ferro build and shot a couple coats of shellac on it today thinking I would need to do some grain filling.

Doesn't seem to have any pours like Mahogany and EI Rosewood. Thinking I could get away without filling. Any one work with this wood ??? Are my instincts right?

I know I like pics of everything so here are a couple of the current state of this build.

Lookin' good, Rich! Love the watery ripples on the top and the bookmatched "dimples" on the back. Nice work!

Love that rosette. Where do you pick up spalted wood. I've seen it on several guitars and often wondered. Sorry, I don't know anything about Pau Ferro either, just enjoying your pictures. Very nice! Clinton

From everything I've read, and the Pau Ferro I've got, no, it doesn't need pore filling. One of the many lovely things about this wood.

I picked up on eBay and is quite often available. Search for "Luthier". Bought a couple sets thinking I could make a back and side set but not stable wood. Think I paid like $20 plus shipping for a bookmatched set.

Pau ferro is a closed pore wood, like maple. I've built one guitar so far using it, and I like it a lot, not just because I don't have to fill the pores, but because it generally has excellent tap tone, and the sides bend "like butter." The only down-side I can report about it is it's one of "those woods." I started developing a rash on my hands and forearms about halfway through the build.

Best,

Michael
