Although this is a cool photo, it's just a hoax. You can read about it here

Roy, can you post that full size?

Hey some friends of mine came over and went out to Molokina and saw whales and spinner dolphins. I've seen neither.

They were in Alaska when the whales were up there and wondered if these could be the same, due to migration????

Those of us in the Bay Area probably recognized the Golden Gate bridge, there.

Actually, this was a REAL pic that the folks at the Hoax site are using to propagate a hoax, that the picture is a hoax. But it is not a hoax. It is a real event that happened. I was there! I'm the guy on the rope ladder. But don't worry, I'm just fine. The ladder didn't fare so well though.

I just can't believe people would try to hoax other people like that. I would never do such a thing!
Roy, can you post that full size?
Here you go. Of course this was when I was younger and in better shape.

As for the whales your friend saw. They make an annual trip down here from Alaska every year to mate and calf then they head back up to Alaska. At times they can put on quite a show.Roy O38425.855162037

I saw a show recently that was probably the inspiration for this hoax. There is a small island just off the coast of a large city in South Africa that is inhabited by a large number of seals. Swimming around the island are a large number of sharks. When a seal gets too far from the island, whammo, shark bait. You'd be amazed at how far out of the water one of those seals can jump when it's being chased by a shark. Then the sharks jump after the seals, which is something they aren't really known to do. Sharks haven't yet figured out that the seals do come down eventually. It's terrifying yet amazing to watch. If I ever make it to South Africa, I ain't going swimming.

Oh, you can swim fairly safely in South Africa. Thing is, you really don't want to, because gorgeous as the water is, it's also really, really, really freezing cold. And it's colder in the summer than it is in the winter season. See, there's this nice stream coming straight up from Antarctica, and in the summer, more ice melt=more cold water.

The North Sea in Spring/Summer is warmer than that.

Other than that, it's a really fantastic place to visit, nowhere near as 'dangerous' as the rep it's got, very, very cheap, and very friendly people. I spent a great 4 months there doing my research internship.Mattia Valente38426.3677314815
