Well I closed up and bound the Dog Guitar. 1st cutaway. Made the neck
block too wide so it won't be flush with fretboard... WOOOOOPS
I still plan on inlaying the overlapping dog print on the fretboard once I
know its exact position.

How did you find the cutaway portion to bend? Did you thin the sides at all?

I wasn't too difficult with Johns cutway attachment for his bender. I thinned
the sides to 0.085. I practiced with a piece of scrap first. IMPORTANT!!!!
I made some mistakes on the scrap.
I have a couple of commissions coming up that requested cutaways and I
never had done one. This cutaway is a bit small. Horn should be lower
down the upper bout. Aslo, the cutaway side of my neck block was a bit
wide, so the cutaway is not flush with the side of the fretboard.

I used a paper template gluesticked to the sides.
Drilled some holes and then filed to the line.
Inside there is a thin ebony veneer. I plan on bevelling the sides of the
soundport to help visualize the ebony veneer

A Koa - OM Cutaway -- just what I plan on building for myself. (I've got some Black Acacia from Tim, a set of Koa and another from the Zootman in inventory)

Andy I appreciate the will offer -- seeing this one -- gives me evil thoughts about your longevity

Looking at the this guitar and the lovely shell purfling and thinking about your earlier thread and anxiety about cutting inlays...kinda makes me chuckle as I fear not the inlay but thinking how does he do the purfling so well (don't know if that made sense).

So cool....

Al, this may sound so stupid but how do you inlay the pear in the fingerboard?? Do you simply route the channel and inlay or do you install with an ebony binding like you would with the soundboard?

How to inlay the fretboard with abalone binding:
1. Cut fretboard to appropriate taper minus the binding width. (Don't
bind yet)
2. After tapered, cut the binding (abalonel) slot just like a guitar for
binding and purfling.
This literally takes 10 seconds once you have the correct bearing and
depth
3. Then I glue the strips of abalone in the rabbet (sp?) groove. I don't
worry about the fret slots. I just inlay the entire length. The first time I
did this I actually cut each piece to fit between the frets. A total waste of
time!!! I use the Stew Mac Binding tape and CA wick method
4. Once inlayed, I then use my fret saw blade and cut the abalone and
clean the fret slots.
5. Then I bind the fretboard with ebony binding.
6. Fill gaps with CYA
7. Sand fretboard with my 18" long sanding block.

BTW I don't clean up my fretboard inlays until I have done the abalone
and binding so I can just sand once!!

Very cool, Andy, pretty wood too! I like a little lightness in the theme of a guitar. The back reminds me a of Rhodesian Ridgeback I used to know. Went by the name Mau-Mau.....
