Ok...So I am finally breaking down and looking for something to make cutting binding and purfling channels a snap. I have the choice limited to 3, all a little different. Marks Binding Jig from Guitarjigs.com, John Halls Binding jig at Blues Creek Guitars and a Binding cutting base from luthiertool.com for my dewalt laminate trimmer. All are pretty much in the same $ ballpark. Does anyone have opinions on the 3 to help my final decision? Right now I am leaning towards the base for the laminate trimmer but can easily be swayed.
Thanks in advance

I would vote for Don Williams binding jig. You would need to build it. Don has directions on his website.

I have some plans for a really good one used at school and sort of like Don's. the box is stationary and the router floats as moves so just have to keep router on top or back. send me address and i will send them to you.

I use the one from John Hall and it does ok. It isn't the jig that messes up but the jig user. Once figured out how to set it up, no problems. need a dome or whatever call it so cuts channel more even and not deeper in some area(waist) and not deep enough others(near neck block)I may change someday but Johns rig is good. I have good friend who has Mark Ketts and used it first time with no problems. Anything Mark makes is first class. I am sure Don's is great also. I tend to use stuff made or sold by OLF sponsers first.

I routed 9 guitar bodies last night using my take on Don's excellent idea. 9 bodies in an evening(couple/few hours). I could never have done that otherwise.

All for about $20 in slides and bearings(not counting the laminate trimmer) and an hour's work making the rest from scraps.

Thanks again, Don!!!

Frank

I am a big fan of Mark's jig from www.guitarjigs.com. It is the only one I have ever used and it is great. No problems. I can cut all my binding and purfling channels in 15-20 per guitar. I have done 7 instruments with it and am still very happy.

Josh

I started off with the Stew-Mac dremel cutter then I used the Ribecke design for several years and now I have Mark's jig and it blows them both away. I can't comment on Don's design as I have never used one. Bruce D. made some interesting mods to his Kett jig and he seems pretty happy with it too.

I like my jig, but am very impressed with the type that Mark Kett makes. It's almost fool-proof, and has no bearings to mess with. I like that a lot!
