Well, the file's broken off flush with the top of the bridge, and only 1" or so remains below the bridge plate...so I'm limited there...the screw extractor thing might work if I can get a hole drilled in the file....maybe start with a Dremel and dental burr?

Just my luck Michael...this stinkin' guitar has fought me the whole way, and I've just about got it strung up and now this...    I'm wondering if a dental burr will cut into the steel enough to get a screw extractor in there...

Larry,

Can you rig up some wooden cauls, the one inside with a bit of steel on it, and then use a clamp to push the file out. By putting a caul on the bridge and one over the file end you should be able to crank on the clamp without any worry of damage as the force will be on the file. Just drill a shallow hole in the caul for inside the guitar and place the file end in the hole so that nothing slips. I bet if you move that file up a 1/4 inch you will have it out.

Good Luck!

Shane, I thought of a similar idea but I don't know if I have a clamp with a throat that'll allow me to get there...a caul on top with a hole for the file to come up thru, and just letting the clamp pad bear on the inside end of the file...other than that, I fear I'm looking at Russel and Jim's ideas of heating the bridge off....

Larry,

I take it this is a rat-tail file with spiralled teeth that act like threads. Is that right?
...pack her full of dynamite, bung up the sound hole, light the fuse and stand back and block your ears
That's WAY overkill. All you need is a couple drops of nitroglyserine and a hammer.

Larry, of course, the file has a helix to the cut, if you drill it out try and make sure you go opposite the cut of the file.

They do make left handed drills that go against prevaling spiral! I'd try and remove the bridge if I were you, but that's a decision you'll have to make.

You can usually get a reverse rotation drill at a machinist supply. Be advised, file hardened steel is some of the hardest there is! You may be able to use a carbide drill.

You also may drill a hole in a block of wood and place the wood over the pin hole and C-clamp press the file out from the inside, if you have a C-clamp deep enough!

Hope this helps Bud!

IT'S OUT!!!!

The dynamite worked!

By the by, and I'll probably put this up under a new thread...I got a call just as the thing snapped out of the pin hole, from a guy with a foreign accent regarding a possible commission...it seems that to his knowledge, I'm the closest luthier to Washington DC that can help him!!! He seemed to be unsure of what if anything he wanted other than a short-scale acoustic...maybe I'm paranoid, but sounded kinda fishy-scammy to me, but he did say he got the # from my website...anyone out there get any calls like that lately?

When is your birthday Larry. Maybe we can all chip in and get you a real reamer

On you perspective client don't be too suprised if you get an order. I had one that came out of the blue like that. I was sceptical about as well but had the deposit in hand in a short time and am currently building. You just never Know

Thanks Serge, but I must say that the commission is only a "possible" one, but I'm believing for great things! Enjoy the Sopranos!
