Anybody here ever do a translucent white finish, I've got one that's kicking my butt! I'm using tinted ktm-9 which I've done on numerous occasions but with different colors & it's worked fine.
I can't seem to get an even look, some parts appear less translucent than others. the finish is so thin it's almost impossible to sand back without sanding through. The only thing I can think of that's different is the tint which is actually designed for an opaque finish but I've thinned out to look more like a wash.

Opaque dyes don't make very good translucent dyes because of the pigment doesn’t tend to suspend in solution evenly easily. I suspect due to the size of it's solids. And I am guessing that the color or tint you are looking for "white" is going to be the hardest to find in a metal-complex dye wich is ideal as a translusent dye

Well this is what I finaly ended up with, what do ya think. I haven't applied the clear yet.

Looks good Dale I guess the question is."Is this the effect you were after?" Did you do this usuing the opaque dye tinned out?

Pretty much so, I showed it to the customer and he was happy with it. I guess that's what count's.
Yep, it's the stuff Stew Mac sale's colortone I think. I had to get it reallllll thin, widen the pattern on the gun and do several quick sweeps. didn’t apply as smooth as I would like but it was workable.

I saw a fender done the same way last week. Yours looks just as good. A little clear lacquer and it will shine.

Nice work indeed. That kind of finish is tough to pull off.

On another note, I've been in Charleston for the last 2 1/2 weeks recording the Spoleto Chamber Music Series for radio broadcast.
