I'm currently building a guitar out of bubinga. This wood is straight grained with no bees wing. The wood is still very beautiful, just not fancy. This wood was very easy to bend. I like an understated look to my guitars and this stuff seems to fit the bill perfectly.

I picked up my set for $25 (sides, back, headplate, fingerboard, and bridge blank) at the last A.S.I.A conference. (yet another good reason to go to the symposium!!!) The guy selling it was Tom Henry from Baltimore. He doesn't seem to have any presence on the web. I'd like to get some more but all the bubinga that I can find is somewhat fancier that what I like. Does anyone know where I can get some boring bubinga?

Grizzly sell bubinga sets. I think they are in the 40 dollar range.

They are awfully thick. I think mine are almost 1/4 in thick. They'll take a lot of sanding to get them thicknessed.

They are also fairly plain looking.

The $25 was a special A.S.I.A deal. Have you considered buying a table as A.S.I.A? You could move a lot of wood.

Mike I am really thinking about attending. Do they actually bring a lot of wood with them? Never attended one of these but sure would like too.

I went to the last ASIA symposium with a self-imposed "will not buy wood" rule. I ended up leaving with a lot of great wood at incredible prices. I just couldn't hold back when looking at the quality vs. special prices. Between Allied Lutherie, LMI, and many of the smaller vendors there were incredible amounts of great wood ... something I did not expect not knowing any better.

There's a bunch of nice plain Bubinga at the woodcraft near me. I bought some fancier stuff there, but there's plain stuff too. I'll shoot an email your way...

Don, the Woodcraft store here had some nice 14" wide waterfall bubinga the other day when I was in there. Had to keep my hands behind my back, after all, I just went there to pick up some screws.

As Pete said, there is a lot of wood there. I'd say that more than 1/2 of the tables were primarily wood dealers. The dealer's room, alone, is worth the trip to the symposium. Besides LMI and StewMac, There are a half dozen other parts venders as well as all of the major pearl suppliers. One table, Blues Creek, had an enormous selection of stuff. Another table, Craig <something> had a table where he was showing off his superb inlay work. Lots of fish if I recall

Bob, you really should. I've never been to an AISA symposium, but I have attended a number of GAL conventions. When the wood vendors open up for business, the luthiers start going crazy... like a feeding frenzy among sharks. I can imagine that a syposium would be the same. Do, indeed, go! Get a table, take a lot of wood, and be prepared to make lots of $$. Plus, you'll have a bunch of fun, too.

I'm still hearing from vendors and don't have anything like a complete list
of people who will be at the Symposium, but I can tell you that in 2003,
we had approx. 40 vendors from the US, Canada, and Italy. Most (or all) of
them are returning, plus new vendors from the US and (even) Bosnia/
Montenegro! The big names will be there (Allied, Stewart-MacDonald,
LMI, Rivolta) along with lots of smaller businesses. There were, I think, six
tables just of pearl and inlay materials.

Hope to see you there, and try not to drool on the merchandise!
