I have returned from my avatarical sabbatical with a new image, I for one shall miss my ability to make an animated statement to my lutherically linked brothers and sisters.

Cheers all

I like the OT stuff mixed in with the guitar building stuff. The latter shows what we do, but the former shows who we are, both are equally important in my view if we are to have a community. But I guess this is The Big Kahuna's electronic front porch and if he wants us to take it out back, then we take it out back.

As to avatars; I saw a bouncing boobies avatar on another forum that I wanted to use and almost did, but then I thought of Lance's daughter sitting in his lap seeing all this stuff and thought better of it. Glad I did. I'm all for using whatever avatar grabs your fancy, just remember there are kiddies seeing this stuff too. There's more than enough sex and violence on the net as it is.

Since we are not voting, I vote for mixed topics. This is the only forum that I feel like I know the folks well enough to joke around and be myself with. The reason is because everyone is concientious enough to be non-offensive and just be themselves. Its a great compliment to the mods that this good feeling vibe has gone on so long with just a couple of tiny waves.
Keep up the good work!
Evan
I am a bit weird but I like the cascading topics too ,sure I have to scroll more, but I like being able to see at a Glance new posts etc.
The cascading threads have to go. They are really slowing things down. I am sure you all notice the big slow down we have taken recently and that is the reason. We are getting more than 4 million page views a day and we are hitting the database (literally) hundreds of times for every page load.

I personally like to be able to scan a topic in an "expanded" view like we get in the cascading threads, but the size and activity of the community are going to force us to get off this model.

On the OT threads, I don't think we have a clear definition of what is close and off topic vs. what is far afield... and I will admit, I am as bad as anyone....

I have started posts about guns, scales, television shows and a host of other things, but when these threads grow long they take up a big percentage of the first page and I think that makes it kind of difficult to quickly scan for guitar content (I am thinking of the most recent thread about the cats, but there are others... again, some of them mine.)

Some of the "near" stuff is ok, or topics that wander are ok too.

I think animated avatars should be allowed as long as they have some thing to do with cowbells!!

Michael,
I wont consider this comment an insult on our choice to remove the animated avators, although it sounds like one.
This may be an unpopular choice with you, but it was your stripping avator and one other that pushed me over the top with this issue. So, Ill take your BORING avator as an UPGRADE over your previous choice.
At least my kids dont point to it and ask "whats she doing?"

No problem Brock

I can understand with that volume of traffic it is impossible to keep them.

Michael,

I must agree with what Lance has said. I think you will notice, most of us use our actual names as our "handles". It really seems to create a sense of community. I am really surprised that you have not been asked to change your handle. I think it borders on the offensive, and it is a testament to the patience of Lance, Brock, Don and everyone else here at the OLF that they have tolerated it. The avatar was way over the top. In my experience, this is a family friendly forum 1st and foremost. A place that you can share with your wife/husband or kids. This may not work for everyone, but I feel that if your are going to be a part of the OLF, you should be respectful of the guidelines and code of conduct. So, the sarcastic "Boring" avatar just seems out of place here

So little is asked of us at the OLF, and so much is given, it just seems like common sense.

Jeff

Nicely said, Jeff.

Mutual respect is necessary for any relationship to work. There's a difference between voicing a difference of opinion and ridiculing.

Lance and Brock created a great site here, and even though it has imperfections, which by the way, are merely based on opinion, it's one of the best boats afloat.

I will miss the More Cowbell and More Zootman avatars, but the stripper was offensive in the light of having a G-rated site. G stands for "Great".
If moving avatars cause that much distraction and controversy, we're better off without them.

I for one didnt see the stripper avatar - in defense of my previous post, please take this into account when my last post is read.
The office worker one didnt really affect me negatively as I caught the reference.
We are here to discuss guitars and not flash animation or computer graphics, so I dont really care that much about the avatar situation.
Certainly not enough to PO the exceptional amatuers and world class builders here, and the potential advice they might give me{or not}, when I need advice!
You may want to consider that buttzilla before being too snide.
Cheers

Some of us have had a hard row to hoe and it has left a hard edge! I have to really resist giving out a big sometimes, but I don't really want to spread that kind of attitude around.

The thought of a 3 or 4 year old having to sit down on his daddy's knee and watch this is troubling. The net is really wide open in many places and that's a necessity, but there should not just be a place to escape that, but also handle this inevitable overspill, with patience and brotherly love.

I admire Lances more hands off approach and careful handling of peoples feelings and an opportunity to post in a great forum.

If ani-avatars have to go then so be it, and believe me as the guy who actually dreamed up the "More Zootman" avatar with Mayes brilliant inspiration, I am VERY sorry to see them go! But thanks to Lance for a great forum and the care for each others sensibilities!!

While still not a fan of blinking things on forums, that Serge-icon was pretty hilarious.

Many thanks Lance, things were getting a little over the top with the Avatar competition and excessive use of juvenile emoticons. I don't know about all of you but given the volume of junk mail I get at home I was getting tired of sifting through all the trash here to read and see guitar building info. Don't get me wrong I really enjoy the great wit and wise cracks posted in connection with building -- but excessive embellishment with emoticons has got to go.

As for the OT stuff....it's all good!Anthony Z38877.4420949074

One way to stop all the blinking is to push the stop button on your browser after the page has completed loading.

Disclaimer: If anyone already said this I didn't see it because I was to lazy to read through the whole post.

If your saying sorry Serge, I am not sure that you got the right message...The message I got is that life is just to short to be gett'in sooooo serious about such a piddly issue as other peoples use of emoticons and such.

But I guess we need all kinds of people to balance out the buckets.

When I was a small boy I had a very grumpy uncle, he would not even tolerate the sound of children at play in the backyard of his home. A few years back, when he died, he was all alone and nobody even knew, what's worse, nobody really cared

You Serge will never be a grumpy uncle, more power to ya buddy.

Cheers

I figure anything in small doses can be tolerated, its when its overwhelmingly obscene, or annoting (like the dang window and alarm sytem guys who wont stop calling me, interupting my much more important binding glue up) that things get out of control, and become very iritating. Patience, and tolerance to some degree is a wonderful thing.
