I had a few sets of South East Asian rosewood around, thought I might us them. The first set bent well, finished great and make a great looking guitar. The only trouble was the back started cracking a few months later for no apparent reason. Any of you have similar exerience with SE Asian Rosewood or any other type wood?

Joe, I'm unfamiliar with this Rosewood. Do you know it's scientific name?

Don't know the scientific name of this stuff but bought mine as Cambodian Rosewwod. It sounds like your set was not fully dry. I know mine was because it sat in my dry room for years. It has wonderful figure and color especially on the sides. It was pretty oily and hard to glue. Ended up using titebond polyurethane glue with good results. I think Gorilla glue works well.

Do you know if your wood was dry?

I built an SJ with SE Asian RW from LMI, and the back cracked on me, but I think it may have been my fault, not the wood's. It is very very nice rosewood. I sure wish I had more, but I only have one more set.

It's a gorgeous wood.

I think you guys are talking about Dalbergia cochinchinensis? I tag it as Cambodia rosewood also since that's where my stuff came from. Several years ago I had the pleasure of being invited into a warehouse in San Francisco and given full pick of the units prior to them being routed out around the country. What a fun experience and really opened my eyes to figure in rosewood... I spend a full day alone in that warehouse

I've always thought of cochinchinensis as Thailand rosewood, and
bariensis as cambodian/SE Asian. A quick Google on the words backed
that up too, but I believe both rosewoods grow in both regions, so that is
probably where the confusion sets in.

So it is a true dalbergia, good to know. I really like the look of ziricote but it has a similar history of being crackwood. I'm sure the stresses these woods go through in care and handling can make a big difference as well. Fully cured wood should have less problem.

I'm not sure of the scientific name. I got mine from LMI about 6 years ago. It is very nice looking wood and has a good tap tone... and I think I paid around $35 a set!!!

This is the poorest of the sets.

That reso I built with it sounds sweet.I looks great I'll post it later when I buff it. I think it's a great tonewood and also got mine cheap.
