So far I've found two sources for custom length truss rods: LMI and Cumberland Acoustic (a small company outside Nashville that I found by googling for "mandola truss rod" -- their truss rods look just like Stewmac's hot rod). The LMI web site, on the page that describes truss rod installation, says they can make a custom length rod for no extra charge, but "the turnaround time can be lengthy".

Anyone know of any other sources?

BTW, for anyone else who may be interested in this, I got the word from Chris at LMI. Their turnaround time for custom rods is 2-5 weeks, and there is no extra charge.

I also emailed Steve at Cumberland Acoustic, and he emailed me back promptly. He'll gladly make me custom length rods that are like the Stewmac hot rods, for a very reasonable price. I didn't ask him how long it would take, so I don't know about that yet.

I have a luthier friend that makes mine for me. They are single action though, but I can get any size made you like. They look like this:



Some people want double action rods and I am not going to argue with their preference but the makers I know that use these are happy with them.

Shane, I don't see why that rod couldn't be made dual-action by simply ensuring there's enough thread on either end of the threaded block. Twist one way, bends one way, twist the other, bends the other. Identical-looking to a number of dual-action rods...

Hey Mattia, I think it could but they are just built a little different. I am making a dedicated guitar making space, while I wait to get the rest of the materials for my new big shop, so once that this little studio is done I will start to make some double action ones as well. The guy I get these ones from sells them to a number of smaller independant but fulltime builders and they all like this style over teh double action. They claim that the double action rod is just too easy for someone who isn't sure what they are doing to cause some damage to the guitar (the purchaser not the maker) and that this rod offers more that enough movement to do the job. But there isn't no right item except the item a person wants!
